Note: Left school at 14, worked at Manchester house (department store) in Merthyr Tydfil.Went to work at Cfartha Steel Works, lost an eye at 7 years of age due to metal shard. At 27 his eye was removed. Mov ed to Askern in 1921 after recommendation from his older brother (Tom).
Employed at Askern Colliery and lodged at Queens Rd, Askern, with Mr and Mrs Shaw (Edmund and Anne) who had moved from Nottingham a few years earlier. The Shaws had 3 children, Wilfred, Dorothy and Li
