McKean County Democrat, Friday, 13 Nov 1896: Sudden death of Wakefield Chambers, a well-known resident of this borough, dropped dead during the progress of the fire at East Smethport last Saturday morning.
Mr. Chambers had for a long time been subject to heart disease and when he was aroused from his slumbers last Saturday morning by the fire alarm, Mrs. Chambers who realized his condition cautioned him not to over exert himself. He slipped on his clothes and started for the fire some little time before Mrs. Chambers got ready after that day for her and her little daughter's toilet made she started for East Smethport and on her way to the fire she passed Mr. Chambers shop at that time appeared to be is distress from over exertion in hurrying to the scene of the conflagration.
Seeing that her mother's property was being swept away by fire, Mrs. Chambers hurried on her way and her husband slowly pursued his way. Shortly after arriving at the fire and while standing on the rail road he complained to his wife that he was feeling very strangely and asked her to hold him. Immediately thereafter he sank to the ground. A doctor at the scene was called but soon discovered that life was extinct.
Wakefield D. Chambers was born in Dundee, Yates Co., NY in 1853. In 1878 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Daniels daughter of Mrs. J. H. Sowers at Emporium. The fruits of this union were three children, 2 boys and 1 girl. About 16 years ago Mr. & Mrs. Chambers came to Smethport, where they have resided since. During their time here they buried both their first born - boy aged about 3 years and the other about 14 years of age. "Wade" Chambers was a genial, kind souled man. Interment at Rose Hill cemetery.
