a. Note:   His given surname was spelled Chiefalo. When and how the �i� was dropped from the name is unknown. Correspondence to him from members of his family in Italy confirmed this. In fact, when he obtained his citizenship, the name Chiefalo was used.
  His son Thomas may have had something to do with this. Thomas gave the surname a French pronunciation--probably because he studied the French language in high school. This pronunciation created some confusion because Thomas and brother Pat�because of Thomas� influence�used a different pronunciation from those who lived in and around Wellsville, Ohio!
