 THE MILWAUKEE SHIP-YARD COMPANY
The Milwaukee Ship-yard Company was organized and chartered in 1874, with a working capital of $51,000, to continue the business of the private firm of Allan, McClellan & Co. The company's ship-yard and dry-docks ware situated on Vogel's Island and the Menomonee River. One hundred men are employed, and work to the amount of $100,000 is annually turned out. The three-and-after MYOSOTIS which was begun by the old firm, was completed by the present company. During the year 1879, the steam barge R.J. PETERS, capacity 400 M was built; and at this writing (January 1, 1881), another vessel of like proportions is in process of construction. A large amount of re-building and repairing is constantly being done. The company's dry-docks have a capacity of lifting a vessel of 1,500 tons. There are two sets of sectional docks. The officers are: President, John Fitzgerald; Secretary and Treasurer, A.M. Joys; master-mechanics, Louis Pahlow and Robert Allan. Mr. Pahlow is draughtsman and designer of vessel plans. These latter gentlemen are the only members of the original firm now interested in the company.

CAPT. PAHLOW, PIONEER LAKE NAVIGATOR, DIES
Capt. Louis F. Pahlow, 84, the third oldest pioneer of Milwaukee, died at his home, 123 East Milwaukee Avenue, Wauwatosa, Monday night, after a short illness.
Capt. Pahlow, who sailed many ships on the Great Lakes, came to Milwaukee in 1843. The only men living in Milwaukee who preceded him are George W. Lee and John Eiff, North Avenue. Capt. Pahlow retired many years ago and since has made his home in Wauwatosa. Many of the earlier lake boats were constructed by him and fifty years ago his name was known in every port.
One son, Dr. Edwin W. Pahlow, and his wife, instructors at the exclusive boys' school at Lawrenceville, NJ figured in the news of Monday when they were discharged because of charges made concerning the interest taken by Mrs. Pahlow in the boys. Four other sons, Robert, Louis, Frank and William, and one daughter, Jennie, also survive. The funeral will be held Thursday.

FATHER OF DISMISSED INSTRUCTOR IS DEAD
Within a few hours after word had been received here of the dismissal of his son, Dr. Edwin W. Pahlow, and the latter's wife, as instructors at the exclusive boys' school at Lawrenceville, NJ, Capt. Lewis F. Pahlow, pioneer resident of Wisconsin, died at his home Monday night.
Capt. Pahlow was 84 years of age. He had been living at 123 East Milwaukee Avenue, Wauwatosa. Besides Dr. Pahlow, he is survived by four sons, Frank, Louis, Robert and William, and one daughter, Jennie.
The dismissal of Dr. Pahlow and his wife as members of the Lawrenceville faculty was of a considerable shock to their friends in the city. Mrs. Pahlow was formerly Gertrude Curtis Brown, a novelist. According to Mrs. Pahlow, the cause is evil construction put upon the "motherly" advice she had given to the boys in her charge. She indignantly refutes the charge that she was responsible for leading boys astray. "Why, I have been a mother to the boys there and to hundreds now at Harvard, Yale, Princeton and other universities," she said. Meetings of protest have been called by her former charges at many universities to protest the dismissal of the Pahlows. Mrs. Pahlow, who married her husband in 1905, has written "The Gilded Chrysalis," "The Cross of Heart's Desire" and "The Glory of Going On." She is now working on "The Bell."
