Mrs Elizabeth Painter of Crowlands Road, Stawell, who died on Sunday at the age of 77 years, had been a resident of this district for over 10 years. The deceased lady was a resident of Hamilton, Scotland, and arrived in Victoria in 1852. She was a daughter of the late Mr Samuel Walker, a pioneer building contractor in this country, and who was the builder of the old Princess Bridge, which was the first bridge to span the Yarra at Melbourne. It was stated that this bridge had then the largest arch in one span in the world. Miss Walker married in 1852 Mr Hezekiah Painter, who was also then a builder and built the Myall Hotel at the corner of Punt Road and Commercial Road, Prahran. Leaving Melbourne, he took part in the search for gold on some of the most famous fields of the state in the fifties and sixties. He arrived at Red Hill, Bendigo, when only a few people were fossicking on the surface. Two women (who assisted in cradling the dirt) and two children were among the little company. Mr Painter conceived the idea of sinking a shaft to tap what he thought might be richer ground lower down. Thus he sunk the first shaft on Bendigo. After having worked the goldfields for a number of years, he went into a hotel at Landsborough, where he carried on business successfully until he removed to Stawell. He spent the rest of his days in this town. Both Mr and Mrs Painter were highly esteemed and respected by a large circle of friends, and the members of the family are likewise held in the highest esteem. The eldest son, the late Mr John Painter, was for some years secretary of the AMA in Stawell. Mr Edward Arthur Painter, now residing in Melbourne, has occupied some important positions on the mining fields of Victoria, New South Wales and West Australia. He received his early training at Stawell. Mr W.D. Painter is in business as a farrier in Richmond, and takes an active interest in many local matters. He is a member of the local school committees, and vice-president of the Victorian School Board Committees Association. The eldest daughter married Mr Edwin Jeffree, a stationmaster on the Victorian Railways. The youngest daughter (Mrs Elizabeth Painter) has resided at home with her mother. All the other members of the family were able to come to Stawell and be with the mother when she passed away. The funeral took place yesterday, the remains being interred in the Stawell Cemetery. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev Norris E. King. The coffin bearers were Messrs G. Gray, W.S. Heal, A.H. Barnes and H. Dane. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Mr F. Crouch.
The builder in charge of the Princes Bridge was David Lennox, a Scottish stonemason.
