Note:   Bio. of Nelson Painter in Mark A. McGruder, History of Pettis County, Missouri (Topeka, Kansas:: Historical Pub. Co., 1919), p. 688. "John Painter was twice married and both the first and second wives strangely bore the maiden name Rachel Red, although they were not related." Comments: This secondary source is the only record known to specifically identify Rachel Redd I. Nelson Painter doubtelessly obtained this account from his grandfather, John Painter. Nelson lived with or near his grandparents until leaving home in 1860, the year John Painter died. Nelson Painter returned to Ohio at the end of Civil War, when his grandmother, the former Rachel Redd II, was still living. Modern researchers--backed by DNA analysis--believe that Rachel Redd I and Rachel Redd II were first cousins, once removed.
