Note: , son of Harvey Carl Bateman] of "The McDowell Family:" "Susan McDowell was another daughter. She married a McNary. They lived in Barton Co, MO. The McNary's moved to California around 1900. IN 1915 they moved back to MO, except the 3 oldest children who were married and had families. In 1918 they moved back to California where they lived until they died. The McNarys had a fruit and grape farm near Fresno, Calif. for many years." From: a letter written by SUSANNAH ELEANOR MCDOWELL MCNARY in 1934: "I have had to give up five children in death. The first [Effa] only a few hours old, the second one I gave to God before he was born. Such a bright and intelligent boy [Clyde], we expected much from him, but God saw fit to take him at three years old. Then the next [Millie] was a dear devoted, everyday Christian girl. She was such a help to me both religious and temporally., but when she was just ready for her life work (teaching school), in her own words 'that she might do good, not for the money that was in it.' Then on her deathbed at 21 she said, 'I would love to live for the good I might do, but if it is God's will, I am willing to go and be with Jesus. She died shouting.'" [This was a revivalist term for shouting the praises of God.] Then the next to go was married, had three little girls, the youngest one year old. Uncle and I took her to raise and she sure has been a comfort to me. She will graduate from high school this term. Then, next to go was my life's companion [James McNary], one I had worshipped, I am afraid, more than the Creator. The next was a heart-rending experience. She was married; had one girl, four little boys. She was starting a fire preparatory to getting supper. The oil exploded and enveloped her in flames. She died shortly after." From: "Fresno Bee," Thursday, June 20, 1946: "Death. Kingsburg, June 19, 1946, Mrs. Susannah Eleanor McNary, born Missouri, age 92, mother of Viola Rufert of Stockton, Milton E. McNary of Dinuba, Mrs. Flossie Steele of Selma, Ray McNary, Kingsburg; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Byrne Funeral Parlor, Selma. Rev. Peter G Koopman officiated. Buried Fowler Cemetery." MCNARY Bible Records, last known to be in the possession of Ray McNary, Kingsburg, Ca, 1937. Also MCDOWELL Bible records were in his possession. Elizabeth Reed: "The MCNARY records were in Grandpa Mc's handwriting (according to Uncle Milton and Uncle Ray.) They had the family Bible until Flossie married and then she took it. Somehow after Flossie died, Uncle Hugh packed up her stuff and put it out in the barn, needless to say, the mice and army ants took their toll on her stuff. Luckily Grandpa Mc. wrote down the stuff. I had to hand copy it as there was no way to get the information. They didn't have Kinko's on every corner way back when I got this stuff." "The MCDOWELL Bible records were sent to Uncle Ray McNary, when they had some discussion regarding his mother's records. She had offered the family Bible to Auntie Frances [Schorr] (who Grandma Mc raised from the time of her mother's death until she married) but Fran was in nurse's training sharing a 10 x 12 room with another student nurse, and had barely enough room for books etc. and being 18 years of age, not thinking, said no to the offer. So Grandma Mc. sent it to her brother's son [W. A. McDowell, as of 1932] who was in the ministry, who was living at that time in MO. So he took the bible someplace and had the records copied or printed up, and sent it to Uncle Ray, When he (Uncle Ray) showed it to me, I begged him to lend me so that I could have a copy, which he did. Sally's husband Dick took it over to JPL and had it copied, one for me and one for Sally. This was way back before copying machines were available for home use. That's how I came to have a copy."
