Notes
a. Note:   o Salatino of Casole Bruzio -- unknown relationship -- he said that Scalzati now has about 300 inhabitants, while Casole Bruzio has about 3000.) The Ellis Island website shows that an Alessandro Salatino, 18, of Cosenza, arrived at the Port of New York on 7 June 1902. This had to have been Alex, even though it has him listed as married -- an evident mistake. Ottowa, Ontario, Canada appears to be listed as the final destination for him and others from Cosenza, including two or three other Salatinos of unknown relationship. It's unknown if Ottowa was just a jumping off point for Alex to travel by train to the Northwest or if he resided in Canada for a time [see census info, below]. The first time Alex shows up in the Tacoma City Directory is in 1907, residing at 1309 South N (later to be called Sheridan Avenue). In 1908 he's shown at 1316 1/2 South M, along with his brother, Michel (sic). In 1909, he and his brothers Eugene, Michael, and Paul, are all living at this same address. Alex's occupation during this period is listed as laborer. The 1910 Tacoma census shows Aleck (sic) Saltino (sic), 25, as the renter of a house at 1216 1/2 South Sheridan Avenue. He's listed as a ditch digger and an alien who immigrated in 1903 [from Canada?]. Others in the household include: wife Mary, 20; son Louie, 1 4/12; daughter Theresa, 2/12; brother Paul, 20, single; brother Eugene, 30, single; brother Mike, 21, single; father-in-law James Lucente, 50, widowed [James' italian name was Vincenzo], and Tony Lucente, 13, brother-in-law [aka Paul Lucento]. In 1920 the Salatino family was living at 1404 S 13th street in Tacoma. This census indicates Alex, an alien, immigrated in 1904. His occupation is listed as Dealer/Wood. ________________________________________________________ Obituary for Alex Salatino, published 2 Jul 1956: ALEX SALATINO Alex Salatino, 72, of 1410 So 14th St., died Saturday in a local hospital.
