Note: Subject: Pallister surname Date: Fri, 24 Oct 1997 21:43:52 +0800 From: Christine Page <cpage@@dana.wanet.com.au>To: PSimmonds@@mcmail.com Hello Renia I have been given your address by Al Jamieson after contacting him re the name Pallister.I am researching this name in Yorks and Durham. I have just had information from a person in the UK that has connected my mother and him as having the same g g grandfather. I am now seeking info on Richard Pallister b 1753 of Cockerton Co Durham who m Isabella Hichinson in 1777. Richard's parents were Robert Pallister and Mary Sowerby who married in 1752. I think. Have you any information that connects to this please? TIA Regards Chris Page Perth Western Australia Subject: Pallister in Durham Date: Wed, 05 Nov 1997 11:16:32 +0000 From: Peter Simmonds <PSimmonds@@mcmail.com>Organization: -To: cpage@@dana.wanet.com.au Dear Christine, Sorry to take so long to reply to your email, but I had my aunt here for a week. She is from Poland and speaks no English, and I speak very little Polish, so it was a hard task to have conversation with her, but very enjoyable. Since she left, I've been back at work all the time, and now I have a morning off. At the moment, I can't find anything to help you, though the marriages you mention, viz Richard Pallister to Isabella Hichinson/Mitchinson (I rather suspect it should be Hutchinson) took place at Darlington in 1777 Robert Pallister to Mary Sowerby at Darligton on 9.12.1752 both of these are on Paul Joiner's Durham marriage index. Paul Joiner is on the web, as is his marriage index, but I don't think his index will give out the details you need. If you wrote to the Durham County Records Office, County Hall, Durham, DH1 5UL with the details of the two marriages, they may be able to give you the parentage, witnesses or other details, from the Darlington parih register. My concentrations of Pallisers are in North Yorkshire (very close to Darlington), so I have a lot of info on them. I have not concentrated on co Durham Pallisers so much. However, if you can give me any other (later) Pallister names, maybe something there will fit. Could you please give me the address for Paul Joiner on the net? Some later ancestors are from Nth Yorks: William P b 1805 (illig. son on Mary P) Cockerton (my ggg grandfather) was the inkeeper of the Shoulder of Mutton at East Cowton. Unfortunately, I can't add very much to it, as I specialise in Palliser rather than Pallister. For Pallister, I only have the births 1838-1870, and I found Joseph (1842) and John (1845) both born in the Darlington district. I also found James (1847) born in the Northallerton district. Thomas William was not registered either as Pallister, or Palliser. I have also looked at my other general baptism, etc lists, and have found nothing further to add. In the census for Shoulder of Mutton, South Cowton, 1851, there is Frances (b 1804 Croft). I have no other details of that census. In the census for Shoulder, 1861, There is William (b 1805) Frances (b 1804) Thomas (b 1839) and Frances age 6 born Leeds grandau of William Jane age 14 born Leeds grandau of William Also, nearby, in Census for South Cowton no 17 is Elizabeth Pallister age 2 with Henry and Mary Wingrove All of this, I expect you know. Sorry I can be of no more help. You say that William was the baseborn (1805) son of Mary Pallister. The census gives his birthplace as Darlington. Do you have any further info on that? His siblings (if any), or her parents. Presumably, you don't, else why would you be searching? If we can get the family out of Darlington (which isn't on IGI, and for which I have no parish register transcripts), they maybe I will be able to help more. Palliser/Pallister before 1838, makes no difference. Just depends on how much info I have collected, which is more Yorkshire, rather than Durham, I should add. Pallister seems to abound in Durham and in the area around York. It seems to be a dialect thing, as Palliser and Pallister are pronounced the same! I have actually gone back as far as the marriage of Robert P to Mary Sowerby in 1752 now. I made contact with a Dennis Pallister who is my sixth cousin, I think. Have you had any contact with Dennis, he lives in Waterlooville in England? He has given me the addresses of some rellies here in Perth Western Australia. Let me know if you would like his address. Regards Chris Page
