a. Note:   When John came to America with his family he was 17 years old and his occupation was a stone cutter. 1880 Census Pennsylvania, Luzerne Co., Wilkes-Barre. John is 30 years old, and born in Wurttemberg, Germany. He is a hotel keeper. Mary is 31 years old and born in Hanover, Germany. Children listed are Fred (6 yrs), Lina (5 yrs), Lorena (3 yrs), and John (1 yrs). They live on Oregon Street, same as other family members. Brother Henry Mailander, age 22 also lives with them. He is a bartender.
  John is not found in the 1900 census for Wilkes-Barre. His wife Mary is a widow with 3 children living with her: John (age 20), Herman (age 18), and Lulu (age 15). John Sr. must have died between 1885 - 1899.
