Notes
a. Note:   #4 John Luther Parker (4 November1884 - 30 June 1966)
John Luther Parker was born on 4 November 1884 in Newport News, Virginia to Charles Washington Parker and Ann Rebecca Turlington.1 He as their fourth son, one of fifteen children.2
On 21 November 1905 in Warwick County, Virginia he married Esther Orah Hopkins. He was 21 years old and she was 15 years old. 7
According to the 1910 Federal Census he was 28 years old and lived on the main county road to Newport News with his wife Ester, 20 years old and one child Victor, 1 year 5 months old. He was a farmer at the time and married four years. 5
The 1920 Federal Census listed him as 35 years old and living with his wife Esther, 30 years old, son Victor 11 years old, daughter Virgie 8 years old, son John L. 5 years old and Carl W. 2 years old. At this time he is a laborer in the shipyard.5 My brother, John, told me that my Grandfather figured he could make more money oystering than working in the Newport News shipyard and quit his job.
On 26 March 1921 Edward Lee Parker, John's brother, granted and conveyed 10.38 acres to John.6 The land was located on Maxwell Lane, Warwick County Virginia and he built a home for his family. 8 John and Esther raised their own garden and farm animals, also the feed for the animals. I can remember them killing hogs one year, that was horrible. My cousin Jane and I hid under my Grandfather's bed. The house is no longer there because the Peninsula Memorial Park Corp. purchased it in 1959. They in turn sold it to the school system and the house was sold and moved. John and Esther had a house build on the other side of the road behind my Uncle Carl's house.
John L., my grandfather, and Victor F., my father built an oyster boat the "Madeline" in the side yard between our houses. I have pictures of the finished boat and them taking it down to Deep Creek to be launched.
John L. passed away on 30 June 1966 in Newport News, Virginia. He was eighty-one years old. He died from Brenchoprumonia, debility and Generalized artiriasclerosis. He is listed as a self-employed carpenter.3 He is buried in the Denbgh Baptist Church Cemetery up front to the left if facing the church building from the side parking lot, beside his wife Esther. 6 & 9
