GREENMAN = grene (the color) + man
1. May be derived from a nickname of one who wore green, or
2. Someone who played the "part" of Green Man in May Day celebrations.
3. Or, could've lived near a village green, or at the sign of the Green Man, a popular public house name.
First record "John Greneman" date 1357 in the Court Rolls of the Borough of Colchester, Essex, England during reign of King Edward III. Surnames began with taxation.
