Notes

He then engaged in teaching, taking charge of Pleasant Grove Academy, Washington County, a position he retained for one year, establishing an enviable reputation as an instructor. In 1851 he engaged in farming on the beautiful farm which has since been his home, and which is one of the best improved places in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood. Mr. Browne, while giving a great deal of attention to farming, has made stock raising his principal business, and is one of the most successful breeders of shorthorn cattle and trotting horses in central Kentucky. While never aspiring to official position, he takes considerable interest in politics, voting with the Democratic party. He filled the office of county school commissioner for a period of six years, and did more for the cause of education during that time than any man who ever held the office. Mr. Browne has been twice married -- the first time in January, 1853, to Miss Mary E. Rogers, daughter of Milton and Elizaberth Rogers, of Washington County. One child was born to this union -- Lizzie C. Browne (deceased). Mrs. Browne died in May, 1856. On the 18th of April, 1860, Mr. Browne's second marriage was solemnized in Boyle County with Miss Ardie Meyer, daughter of A. D. and Elizabeth Meyer. To this marriage have been born three children: Irvin M. (deceased), Mary R. (wife of F. M. Martin), and Thomas R. Browne, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Browne are active members of the Pleasant Grove Church. The 1860 federal census for Washington Co., Kentucky shows the value of his real estate owned as $14,000 and the value of his personal estate as $9,000. The 1870 federal census for Washington Co., Kentucky shows the value of his real estate owned as $14,000 and the value of his personal estate as $8,000.
