Gulick, Jr. was born to Edwin M. and Margaret (Ellison) Gulick on November 20, 1922 when the family was living in Rosedale, Kansas. They later moved to the east side of Kansas City, Missouri where he attended Kensington Grade School. Ed graduated from East High School in 1941. In the Spring of 1942, he enlisted with the United States Marine Corps. He served two years in the South Pacific Theater and was awarded four Pacific Campaign Stars and the Purple Heart. After the war, he attended the Kansas City Art Institute and earned a degree in Industrial Design. His career included a position as plant engineer with Dart Truck Company (later KW Dart). He was a sales representative for welding supplies with Kirk-Wiklund. Ed was active in the Boy Scouts and served as Assistant Scout Master with a troop in Raytown for a number of years. After retirement, he took up woodcarving as a hobby. Those who knew Ed will always remember some of the following characteristics that made him such a unique person: Inventive "When we were in our last year of high school, Eddie needed to pass World History in order to graduate. One of our requirements was to put together a detailed notebook. But he didn't like to write and he said he wouldn't do it. So I typed all the information and put the notebook together for him. Then -- since he was always the artist -- he put this really fancy cover on the notebook. Well, that impressed the teacher so much that Eddie ended up getting a better grade than I did!" Helen Dunn (sister) Steady "I knew who he was while we were in high school. But he didn't know me. Then, after he came back from the Marines when World War II ended, his sister got us connected. We had our first date in January of 1946. Seven dates later, we were engaged. And we got married on November 15, 1946. We were together for almost 59 years. Why, we lived in the same house for 50 of those years." Dolores Gulick (wife) Tough "When I was about 10 years old, there was this family who lived next door to our house -- and they had this 10-year-old boy who kept tripping me and hitting me. One day, I went to Dad in tears and told him what that boy was doing. And he said, 'Well, go hit him twice as hard and twice as often as he hits you.' So I did. I got this kid down on the ground and was really beating him when Mom drove up and saw the whole thing. She said, 'What do you think you are doing?' And I said, 'Well, Daddy told me to do it.' Believe me, Dad and I both got into big trouble!" Vicki Gould (daughter) Considerate "Dad was always big on honesty. When I was growing up, he'd tell me not to lie. He said, 'If you tell one lie, you'll just have to tell another lie to cover up the first one. And then you'll end up telling another and another ...' He was very insistent on being considerate to others. He always put other people first, ahead of himself and his own needs." Kim Robinett (daughter) Humorous "This was a guy with a limitless sense of humor. He was always ready to hear a joke -- or to tell one. But even more fascinating was his 'gift' for pulling off practical jokes. Anyone in the family or in his wide circle of friends will be happy to tell you some of his escapades and practical jokes. Just ask." Gary Gulick (brother) Generous "After we graduated from high school, I wanted to go to college. But the folks didn't have enough money. I had a job where I was making enough to cover the tuition -- but that was about it. I didn't even have enough for bus fare and lunch money. Eddie said, 'If you're stupid enough to want to go back to school, I'll pay for your bus fare and lunch.' And he did." Helen Dunn (sister) Family oriented "Whenever he wasn't working, he was with us. We could go anywhere with him: the hardware store, the lumber yard, the car wash. He would take us everywhere -- except the barbershop. He never would take us to the barbershop. We always wondered what went on there." Vicki Gould and Kim Robinett (daughters) Edwin M.
