Notes
a. Note:   Samuel was a young Revolutionary soldier. He was but twelve years old when the Declaration was published, he stole away from home in 1781, when only seventeen, and joined Lafayette in time to take part in the closing campaign at Yorktow
Note:   n. In 1784 he moved to Kentucky with the McDowells, settling in Mercer County, where he spent the remainder of his life. He served in various expeditions against the Indians after settling in Mercer, and General Washington appointed him the first United States Marshal for Kentucky, in 1792. The Woods-McAfee Memorial source also shows that he was born in Augusta County, Virginia. The Irvine G. McDowell source shows that Samuel died August 1834, in Mercer County, Kentucky. Also, the date of marriage is shown as October 30, 1785, in Lincoln County, Kentucky. The First United States Marshal of Kentucky: Washington appointed Samuel McDowell, Sr., a federal judge and Samuel McDowell, Jr., Marshal of the District of Kentucky, which at that time was a territory. McDowell was the youngest man whom Washington appointed Marshal.(bio by: Joel Farringer)
