Notes
a. Note:   From, The Life and Times of Robert B. McAfee and his Family Connections, page 114. "My Father Robt. McAfee was five feet and eleven inches and a quarter in height, remarkably large round and full breasted, well made in proportion indicat
Note:   ing great strength & activity and endurance, he was considered the most athletic of his family, large, well proportioned face, with prominent square forehead & strong natural powers of mind very black hair thick set on his head & inclined to be curly which he always wore short, he was a good specimen of the Scotch race, Firm and decissive in his character and when his purposes were made up, he had the most unwearied perseverance, so that to decide, was to do, so that impossibility with him was seldom permitted to come within his calculations, his eyes were black or very dark hazel, which strongly indicated a Spanish cross of blood in some of his Ancestors during the intercourse of that nation with Scotland." Robert died in a hospital in New Orleans, May 10, 1795, as the result of a blow on the head with an ax in the hands of a man who was attempting to rob him. "The Descendants of Captain Thomas Carter" states: He was the most daring and adventurous of the famous McAfee brothers; was a soldier in the Battle of Point Pleasant; a member of the McAfee Company that explored Kentucky in 1773, and author of one of the Journals kept upon that expedition; and was Sergeant-at-Arms of Col. Richard Henderson's famous May Convention held at Boonesborough in 1775. His son, Robert Breckinridge McAfee, probably the most distinguished member of this family, was an officer of Col. Johnson's (Kentucky) Regiment in the Battle of the Thames in 1815, later general of the Kentucky militia; a member of the Kentucky Legislature (both Houses) for twenty years; Lieut.-Gov. of the State in 1824-'28; U.S. Minister to the U. S. of Columbia, 1833-'37; President of the Board of Visitors to West Point in 1842; author of some well-known MSS. on the early history of Kentucky; member of the Royal Antiquarian Society of Denmark, etc. Robert McAfee served in the Revolutionary War as a private. In the fall of 1774 he was with his two older brothers James and George in Captain Evan Shelby's company at the Battle of Point Pleasant, where Cornstalk and his army were defeated by General Andrew Lewis. He, with his brothers, was a member of the Virginia Militia from Botetourt County. References to Military Records: Marshall's History of Kentucky The Woods-McAfee Memorial Collins, History of Kentucky, Vol. II Roosevelt's Winning of the West The George Rogers Clark and His Men - Military Records, 1778-1784 source shows that Robert served under his brother, Captain Samuel McAfee, for 32 days during the period October 22 - November 23, 1782, as a member of the Lincoln Militia. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------ Robert McAfee was in Captain Evan Shelby's company at the battle of Point Pleasant - 10 October 1774 He was with Colonel Christian in his expedition against the Cherokees in 1776.
