"William Bruce, died 1843, age 83 years Revolutionary Soldier" Buried Blackerby graveyard, located on farm of Mrs. Oscar Holtzclaw, once known as "the old Pence Place", Lincoln County. (See Nancy Pence, wife of Josiah Holtzclaw in genealogy index). - * - * - Drafted in 1780 into Capt. John White's Company; marched from Warren County. North Carolina, where he then resided, to Camden, under the command of General Gates. Entered the service for three months. Not in the battle at Gates' defeat, but was near there being detached to do certain duty with the baggage waggons. Again entered the service in July 1781 for three months, and marched from Warren County North Carolina, under the draft, to Guilford Court House under the command of Capt. John White. [Can't make out the General's name.] The regiment to which he was attached was commanded by a Continental officer named Eaton (Colonel). He stated that his company was ordered to march in front of the main army. States he was in the battle of Guilford. The same year (1781) he again was drafted for three months, and marched from Warren County to the "lower"? part of the state of North Carolina. - * - * - William Bruce's Last Will and Testament "In the name of God Amen I William Bruce ... of Lincoln Co and state of Kentucky being in perfect memory and sound mind and calling to mind the frailty of life and certainty of death do make and constitute this my last will and Testament. Revoking and Dis... all other Wills, I ... First I commend my spirit and body to that being from whom I had my Existence my body to be decently buried under the direction of my Executors hereafter named, and as to what worldly property it has pleased providence to bless me with it is my will and desire that my Daughter Lucinda Bruce have one Hundred and fifty Dollars also my son James Bruce have one Hundred and fifty Dollars and my Daughter Nancy Blackeby Fifty Dollars, and my two grand Daughters P...lince (Prudance Unknown) Sutton and Susannah Sutton I give and bequeath Fifty dollars to Each, the Balance of my property, I bequeath to my children namely William Bruce Henry Bruce Susannah Edelin Thomas Bruce Lucinda Bruce James Bruce and Mary Graves to share Equally of my Property when sold, said lands Negroes stock of all kinds House hold and Kitchen furniture, all my Bonds and money that may Remain at my Death, I request that my son William Bruce and Henry Bruce act as Executors to this my last will and Testament." Ordered that a certificate be granted to them for obtaining a certificate of the probat of said will in due form of law. Kentucky, Lincoln County Court February Term 1843 Ordered that it be certified to the ... that it was this day proven to the satisfaction of Court by the oaths of Thomas Bruce and James Bruce two credible and respectible witnesses that William Bruce a pensioner of the United States departed this life on the 5th day of March 1842 and that the said William Bruce is the identical person named in an [illegible word] certificate now shown to the Court bearing date the 22nd day of August one thousand eight hundred & thirty three signed by [3 illegible words] War and awarded in the pension office in Book 6 Vol. 7 page 4 by Dan Boyd clerk granting to the said William Bruce a pension of thirty dollars per annum Numbered 19301 and it was also proven to the satisfaction of the court by the same witnesses that the said William Bruce departed this life without leaving any widow.
