Note: Eleanor and James lived Firstly in Hokitika and later went to Christchurch where James gained his Engineers Certificate. They moved to Seddon, and later on to Ward opposite the railway station. Here they established an accommodation house, which at that time was the end of the Rail line and so was a covenient stopping place for people travelling south by coach to Christchurch. It also served as a place for railway workmen to stay while the railway line was being built to Christchurch. Reference to Eleanor Cunliffe and her Accommodation House, is made in the book 'History of Flaxbourne' where it states that on one occasion she was complemented for the flavour of the green vegetable served, which happened to be the tops of the weed 'Fat Hen' as she had no other green vegetables available in the garden at the time. Eleanor managed a very good garden and provided much of the food for her boarding house from it. Sadly in 1936 she was in her garden when she collapsed and died a short while later. On one occasion a neice of Eleanor's Hazel, went to stay and work for her. (One of John and Eunice Mitchell's Daughters). This did not last long as the niece did not enjoy her time with her Aunt, as she found her to be very strict and expected her to work too hard. Some time later after Eleanor died, the accommodation house was burned down. Eleanor had invested in two Houses, one in Hataitai,Wellington, the other in Waterloo Road, Lower hutt. After her death these two houses became the property of her sons, Eric and Tom respectively.

Note: HI15
Note: (Research):Birth, Marriage and death certificate confirmed. Eleanor was born to Agnes Ross in 1869 and the birth certificate names William Allan Storekeeper as the father. After Agnes's wedding to Samuel Mitchell, Eleanor was adopted into the family as Eleanor Ross Mitchell although there was no middle name on her Marriage, death cert. or will. Also she must have believed that she was born in 1872 by the ages quoted on her documents, 65 at Death, and 27 at Marriage. This year coincided with the birth of Lizzie. Burial plot in Flaxbourne Cemetery Ward, adjacent to James Cunliffe, no headstone.
