a. Note:   CHILD 2 - MERRILL EUGENE SANFORD BIRTH: Place conflict: Information from Joseph Edward Sanford Family Bible states Boston, Massachusetts. The 1881 Nova Scotia, Canada census indicated that Merrill was born in Nova Scotia; while all of his military records and Death Certificates indicates he was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Date is given in the Sanford Family Bible as 23 February 1880 ( Name is misspelled and in a very neat penmanship, same as for his older sister's information and the wedding page for their parents; may have been done by someone else). All of his Military and pension papers gives the date as 23 February 1879, as well as his death certificate. On the death certificate of his daughter Mary, his place of birth is given as Nova Scotia. MARRIAGE: He married Sarah in 1908 in Alameda, Saskatchewan. They left for Chilliwack, British Columbia in June 1908. Then in October 1910 they move with family to McCoy, Florida for a short time because of his ill health due to malaria he contracted during his military time in the Philippines. They move back to Chilliwack, only to move to Vedder Mountain August 1913. Their daughter Serethe Ann was born in Everson, Washington in 1917. The 1920 Census located them in Seal River Precinct of Wahkiakum County, Washington. During this time he had his own boat and was licensed to pilot on the Columbia River. His son Joseph recounted many times about the large sturgeons they hooked in the Columbia river. MILITARY: Merrill enlisted on the 19 Dec 1900, for the Phillipine Insurrection with a unit from Minnesota and was activated at the Presidio of San Francisco, California before being shipped to the Phillipine Islands. He was a Corporal in Co E 26th inftry with two and a half years of overseas duty. Enroute home his ship landed in Japan for a short time, before returning to the United States. Was discharged from the service in 15 November 1903 at Fort Mclntosh, Texas. Besides contacting Malaria, he had Yellow Fever which were contributing factors of his death along with stomach cancer. Birth was given as Feb 1880, Massachusetts, was a day laborer. CENSUS : 1920 census he was in the Seal River Precinct, Wahkiakum, Washington. Birth given as Massachusetts, was a Farmer. NATURALIZATION: Letter from Under Secretary of State, Naturalization Branch, Department of the Secretary of State, Ottawa, Canada dated 16 Sept 1941 indicating that no naturalization files could be found for Merrill E. Sanford, The Bellingham Herald, Bellingham, Washington, Wednesday 4 Aug 1925, P.5: Veteran is Buried --Merrill E. Sanford of Everson at Last Sleep (Special to the Herald) EVERSON: Aug 4- Merrill Eugene Sanford Friday evening after a lingering illness. He was born February 23,1879, in Boston, Mass. He Served in the Spanish-American war as a member of Company E, Twenty-Sixth infantry, Mckinley's regiment, on duty in the Philippine Islands. On January 1, 1908, he married Miss Sarah A. Sharp. To his union five children were born, Joseph W., now in Pendleton, Ore.; Keith A., Serethe Ann, Arthur M. and baby William George, all of whom survive their father. He also leaves to mourn his passing his father and mother, Mr & Mrs. J. W. Sanford, who live on adjoining tract, and two sisters, Mrs. L. O. O'Donnell, of Anacortes, who with three daughters attended the funeral, and Mrs. H.J. Mills, of Hamilton, Montana. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Gillies Mortuary chapel in Sumas, with interment in the Nooksack cemetery. Rev. H. M. Course officiating. Music was furnished by an Everson Male quartet consisting of Messrs. Evans, Hart, Osbring and Waugaman, with Mrs Avery at the Organ. Members of Camp Weisenburger No.8, Spanish War Veterans, acted as pallbearers and gave their comrade the regular military funeral. NOTE: The Bellingham Herald, Bellingham, Washington, Wednesday 4 Aug 1925 P. 5: Joseph Sanford returned home Sunday evening from Pendleton. Delays en route prevented him from reaching home in time for his Fathers funeral. He will remain with his mother for the present time. WIFE - Sarah Annie Sharpe BIOGRAPHY: Sarah born in Sundridge, Ontario moved with her family via Settler train to Frobisher, North West Territories (later Saskatchewan). Following marriage in 1908 she moved with husband to Chilliwack and Yarrow British Columbia, Canada. From there to the States to the following areas. Ft McCoy, Florida in October 1910 only for a short time then back to Chilliwack. Then moved to their new home on Vedder Mountain on August 10, 1913. Was in the Seal River area, Washington January 1920. Then in Everson, Washington, and probley also back to Chilliwack for a short time before coming back to Everson, Washington to settle. Sarah recounted that while in Florida, one time that when her children were playing in the yard, she had gone out side and saw a large black snake in the yard by them. Without saying a word she returned to the house and got a 22 rifle and then shot the snake through the with a single shot. After which she took the children into the house and kept them there until her husband came home from work and disposed of the dead snake. She was naturalized (year Unknown) but being the wife of a US citizen probley there was no official paperwork completed. After the death of her husband and later her own parents, Sarah managed to provide for her family with odd jobs, keeping a large garden, and a pig and chicken around for fresh meat. She stood ramrod straight and tall all her years, and was not one to cross. Although her grandchildren all knew about her soft spots and always had fun staying over night at her home to hear stories and make pop corn balls.
