Note: BIRTH: In a General Affidavit regarding the claim for a pension by Sarah A. Sanford on the service of Merrill E. Sanford; a Dr. S. A. Patten declares: That on November the first, nineteen hundred and twenty two (Nov 1st 1922) I attended Mrs. S. A. Sanford, at and during the birth of, Arthur Merrill Sanford (male). [U.S. Pension Office, Jan 20, 1926]. ADOPTION: Lorretta Dawn Hayes; Daughter of Evelyn Ada (McCormick) Hayes & Howard Hayes, Abt: 1942 Mary Ann, nee as Lillian Marlene Nelson; Daughter of Norval Helmer Nelson (Bn Unalaska, Washington in 1925) & Virginia Kochergan (Bn St. Paul Island, AK 1925), Adopted on 21 Dec. 1954. BIOGRAPHY: Art grew up in the Roeder Township of Whatcom County, Washington. He, his Brothers, and his widowed Mother all knew the hard times of the Depression. He recalled that the family managed by raising a calf or hog, bagging a deer, growing a large garden, or picking clams which were canned by his Mother; "things you did to supplement your larder." During World War II, Art served in the U.S. Army with various duty assignments to include the Philippines. Separated from his family during the war, he saw his first born son "Chuck," who was just over three, for the first time when he had returned from overseas. Art worked as a dozer operator for C.V. Wilder and then in the Woods as a logger for many years. In Alaska, he would have his wife Ev, and their children join him at camp if the company had facilities for families. For those who would leave the beaten path, Art's outdoors experience spawned the following admonitions: "Let others know where you are going and when you are due back". Then he follows with: "know you boundaries, stay within them, and don't push too far". Good advice for any situation in life. Art later worked ten years as a Property Officer supervising twenty-five people for the State of Alaska. He retired form this position to go commercial fishing, and Ev joined him to live on their boat, named the Vio Con Dios. However his dream was cut short when heart by-pass problems forced the sale of the boat. Art's many fishing experiences and ability to repair rods and reels has provided a source of information both for the neophyte and the veteran fisherman; and an assurance of the appropriate and functioning equipment. His spinning of tales from his outdoor adventures are the extras that one got with his service. How long he 'Pulled you leg,' was dependent on your own sincerity. Art has a wide variety of interest, such as stamp collecting, jig saw puzzles, cross word puzzles, fishing, and hunting. He was the 'un-official harbor master for the Gastineau Channel. One would have to say that Art is a typical Alaskan, and a bit of a romantic. He is a family patriarch who was exceptionally close to his family and grandchildren. He was a strong man, with deep faith in God, who has been a role model for his family and friends. Above BIOGRAPHY given by Dan Sanford Genealogy OBITUARY: Arthur M.
