Notes
a. Note:   Daniel Breen was orphaned at an early age a great possibility being the famine of 1846-1848. There is the strongest chance that both is brothers died during or after the famine either from starvation or disease. This would have left him a bitter man. He hated the British government and anyone who had anything to do with the Anglo-Irish in Ireland. Daniel became a horse ploughman. He was almost 40 when he married and Mary was not quite 17. They married in Tullaroan where Mary Britt's family may have been living at the time. Daniel and Mary's first 12 children were born in Briskala near Oldtown near Tullaroan. After Michael was born in 1903 they moved to Ballykeefe where the other 6 children were born. Dan worked for the O'Sullivans - a brother and sister who were very short and at some stage a horse went missing and he got the blame. This was in Briskala and even though he was found innocent (thanks to the parish priest insisting the real culprit own up) that is the reason for them moving to Ballykeefe. He owned a couple of acres in Callan called Breens Fields and apparently, once when he was on a drinking spree he sold them, much to Mary's disgust. Mary worked in the fields and helped out at the farms nearby. She also ran her own farm with animals, poultry, vegetables etc. As well as that she acted as the local mid wife and laid out the dead. Dan bacame a heavy drinker and had a bad temper. There were lots of arguements which must have been hard on Mary and the children. There were only ever 5 children living at the cottage at any given time. In later life Dan became an invalid with arthritis for some time before he died. It was so bad he had to walk with two sticks but still managed to father 6 more children. Daniel died in the cottage in Ballykeefe aged 75 of heart failure and Mary died in the Old Aged Home in Thomastown aged 84 of arteriosclerosis
