a. Note:   James Ridge was a sergeant in the English army then migrated to Townsville, Australia in 1900. He was in the Royal Australian Artillery and was stationed at Kissing Point Army Barracks, the Strand, Townsville. Mary Ellen Keny was a school teacher in Ireland and migrated to Australia. She taught at St Paticks College , the Strand. James was a good shot with a pistol. James and Mary-Ellen ran the Aitkenvale Arms Hotel and had 4 children while there, Nancy, Jimmy, Mary-Ellen and Rosie.They also bred horses in Aitkenval. When the lease ran out on the hotel they moved to Hughenden and ran the Australian Hotel where John was born but died at birth. Mary-Ellen said the cord was wrapped round the baby's neck and the midwife panicked an couldn't get the baby to breathe. John is buried in the Hughenden cemetery. James went home for a holiday and on the way back he called in to see Mary-Ellen's sister Bridget Gorman, at Tiger St, Ipswich. He developed double pneumonia and died.
