Notes
a. Note:   the folling was written by robert v. mcnutt in 1975. James mcnutt married sarah armatage and came from Ireland late 1700's or early 1800. James mcnutt came through Philadelphia and up the juniata river in the towboats , was a blacksmith and worked for a time on the mules that drew the boats over the mountains through Johnstown. How he came to settle in what is now Brushvally is unknown, but he marked out a Tomahawkclaim of 600 acres heavily covered with timber, chestnut , oaks , poupler and other including sugar maple, from which they made sugar. some of the clan were carpenters, masons, etc. One trade was known as coopers, this was making hogsheads barrels which would hold 62 gallons. The sides were straight of the finest oak, the top being smaller then the bottom. I can remember some of them. They also made railroad ties by hand with a broad - ax. I can remember my father making a few of these ties. The original deed from the government contained a clause that reserved 1/8 of all the gold and silver that might be discovered on the land. There was no gold discovered, butthey were unaware of the coal that was under all this land. Of the original 600 acre tract, my father only owned about 100 acres. to which he added another tract of about 100 acres. from another piece of property." His father that is mentioned here is Alvin TaylorMcnutt.
