a. Note:   N236 World War II veteran. Obituary - The Washington Post, Febrauary 4, 1976: Allen M. Ross, 62, retired archivist with the National Archives here, died of cancer, Sunday, [Feb. 1. 1976] at Winchester, Va., Memorial Hospital. He retired in 1970 after 35 years with the National Archives. Since then he had lived near Strasburg, Va. A native of Washinton, Mr. Ross graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.A in American Government and did graduate work at The George Washington University. He joined the National Archives before World War II, and then served as a Navy gunnery officer in the war, serving on a destroyer in the European theater. After the war, Mr. ross returned to the National Archives and made his home in Falls Church, where he helped found Knox Presbyterian Church and served as its first Sunday school supertintendent. He also was active in the Boy Scouts in Northern Virginia. Mr. Ross served for several years as human resources planner for the Lord Fairfax Planning Commission in Front Royal after moving to his home near Strasburg. A member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, he was a deacon of the Strasburg Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Louise Shelton Ross, of the home; a son, Murray, of Springfield, Va.; a daughter, Julie Clark of Woodbridge, and four grandchildren. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy may be in the form of contributions to the Strasburg rescue squad.
