Notes
a. Note:   Susanna or Susannah __??__ 2609died before Feb 1 1674. All data from Knapp. Fred Knapp states the following: Simon's second wife, Susanna, is often referred to as "Susanna Smith" in many sources but without evidence or proof given of such. It is probable that a misunderstanding occurred in early research by virtue of the term "Smith" used in early days to identify, in this case, "Blacksmith", which was with little doubt assumed, in reference, that "Smith" was the surname of Susanna, second wife of Simon Hoyt [The Great Migration Begins by Robert C. Anderson; New England Historical/Genealogical Register]. Grants are found made specifically for the "Smith" or "Miller" in new towns, without stating the name of the person employed in that calling. In the list of houses built in Situate, MA, the 21st built, probably just a few months after that of Simon Hoyt, was "The Smiths, Goodman Hait's brother". Who this brother was might and has never been learned, but is probably the basis used in earlier writings for the identification of Simon's second wife, Susanna. (Her Christian name is variously spelled with and without the "h"). Until some proof of her surname is found, she should be referred to strictly as "Susanna(h)" __??__. HOYT, Simon (1590-1657) & 2/Immigrant: Winthrop Fleet Susanna [SMITH] (-1674), m/2 Robert BATES; bef Apr 1635; Dorchester/Windsor, CT {Mead-Clark 70; Frame-Dana 248; Keeler-Wood 325; Hart Anc. 149; Tompkins Gen. Chart; TAG 10:116, 11:34; Bissell Anc. 112; Fairfield Fam. 1:293; Windsor CT 2:410; Deerfield 336; Crary-Dunham 104; Frost 357; Hoyt 291; Warren (#7) 407} [Torrey] When the brides surname is within brackets, Torrey had found a reliable source that identified the brides maiden surname with a good deal of confidence. These sources are often based on indirect evidence such as a deed or a will. In such cases, the exact marriage date is almost never known, and Torrey will often give an approximation. Example: John GARDNER & Susanna [GREEN]; b 1681 [the b meaning by]; Boston/Salem.
