Notes
a. Note: Henry SHERMAN - b. about 1511 or 1512, Yaxley, Suffolk,England; d. 1590, Dedham, Essex. In a deposition dated Oct. 11,1574 at Dedham, he stated he was age 62 "or there abouts,"and had lived at Dedham 40 years. Will dated Jan. 20, 1589/90with codicil Feb. 16, 1589/90, and proved July 25, 1590. Henrywas a shearman and clothier in Dedham from 1534, and a landholderof considerable means. Married second June 5, 1581, Dedham, Essex,Marion (SMYTH) WILSON, widow of Edmund WILSON; and third Margery. [
http://kinnexions.com/smlawson/sherman.htm]
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% There are conflicting opinions as to who Henry's father was: - The Patterson genealogy says Henry was son of the Thomas Sherman of Yaxley, Suffolk, England, who died in 1551. - The Thayer genealogy says that Henry's father was the Thomas Sherman who came to Dedham, "probably from County Suffolk," and was buried at Dedham, co. Essex, 16 March 1554. According to Thayer, the Sherman family at Dedham retained the trade (cloth dressers, or shearers of cloth) and also the coat of arms worn by that branch of the family residing in or about London. No supporting documents are referenced. - Stratton's "Transatlantic Shermans" says that Henry Sherman, father of Edmund the immigrant to New England, was the first of the family at Dedham, where he deposed in 1574 that he was age 62, and that he had lived in Dedham 40 years -- hence born around 1512. Stratton argues that this made Henry too old to be the son of Thomas Sherman of Yaxley. Stratton gives the date of Henry's marriage to Agnes Butter as about 1542 -- when Henry was about 30, by this reckoning. Stratton also notes that Henry Sherman, son of Thomas Sherman of Yaxley was named godson in the will of Thomas Wace, probated 5 March 1538. Henry received 6s 8d, and his father Thomas was an Executor of the will [cites Register 67, p. 154]. Again, Stratton considered Henry Sherman of Dedham too old to be referred to as godson in such a bequest. There are some obvious questions here, and no firm dates for marriages and births. If, however, Henry's age in 1574 were 52 rather than 62, all the mathematics would work out very nicely. He could have married at age 20, an age similar to the age at which Thomas of Yaxley seems to have married. And a birthdate of about 1522 would place him nicely as fourth son in the family, as shown by Thomas' will. Such a discrepancy could be the result of a misreading of a number; a clerical error in recording his age; or the deponant could have exaggerated his age -- not an infrequent occurrance in those days. Or we may be dealing with two different Sherman families. Further research is needed to prove Henry's parentage. The Patterson genealogy says that Henry Sherman was serving his apprenticeship when his father Thomas Sherman of Yaxley made his will 20 January 1551. The Thayer genealogy says that Henry was born in co. Suffolk, England, and came with his father to Dedham, where he died in 1589. The Patterson genealogy reports that court records of 20 March 1590/1591 at Dedham found that "Henry Sherman, the elder, a tenant of this mannor, died since the last court. He had lands called Heckell, Wayland and Byrdes." He lived at Dedham and Colchester in Essex. Davis calls him "Henry Sherman of Colchester" and says his will is dated 20 January 1589/90, proved 25 July 1590. Henry married (1) Agnes Butter, by whom he had 7 children. He married (2) Marion ([--?--]) Willson, widow of Edmund Willson at Dedham 5 June 1581. No issue. Married (3) Margery ([--?--]). No issue. ["Sanford-Shulsen Family"]
