Note: English Place Name Society, West Riding of Yorkshire, vol. 1, states: Morthen is not recorded independently as the name of a district. Thatfunction is implied in in its use as an affix in the names of Aston(in Morthyng), Brampton en le Morthen, Dinnington (in Morthing) andLaughton en le Morthen; from this distribution Morthen would appear tohave been a district some six or seven miles across on the east sideof the Rother valley, roughly located between Rotherham and thesouthern boundary of the Riding. The name survives as that of thevillage or Morthen (now in Whiston).
