Note: Doris Germaine Als arrived in the USA (Ellis Island) April 15, 1914 from Bridgetown, Saint Michael, Barbados 0n the Francis, along with Doris was her mother and cousin Arthur Callender. Doris and her mother resided at 37 Hammond St., Boston, Ma. with her uncle and aunt (Benjamin and Helena Callender). Sometime late Doris and mother moved to 11 Westminster St., Boston, Ma. Doris and Amos first met at the home of their mutual piano teacher. Sharing a love of music led to a romance and marriage. Doris played the piano and violin, eventually Amos and Doris sang with the Symphony Choral Union. After Amos' death Doris returned to Barbados where their son, LeRoy was born August 29, 1922. Doris, Gertrude (mother), Geraldine (Doris' daughter), LeRoy (son) and her brother David Als arrived back in the USA (Ellis Island) October 29, 1922 on the Vandyck. She stayed with her aunt Seliva Simmons at 714 Shawmut Ave., Boston, Ma. and worked as a dressmaker. She later moved to N.Y. (983 Lafayette Ave., Brooklyn, NY.), studied hairdressing beautician. Simultaneously she worked as a real estate broker, operated a small candy store, then a restaurant, and found time to sell Avon, Stanly and Watkins products. She and her brother, David formed D & D Sportswear and manufactured ladies sports apparel. Later she arts and crafts for the Bernet Ulman Co. After retiring she worked actively with the Senior Citizens.
