Notes
a. Note:   N2 THERE ARE 2 SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT REGARDING THE TEEL/DIEHL QUESTION. Betty J. King maintained to the end that the DIEHLS were NOT part of our family line, however, there is some new thinking on this. Teel to Ivan & Juanita Thomas dated 8 june 1990. (sent to me by Steven Sproul <STDSPL@@aol.com> "For six years, from 1983 to 1989, My search for the history of the Teel ancestors moved backwards in time down many trails. It reached a dead-end when I could go no further than a Deed for the purchase of 166 acres on Elliots Creek By Adam Teal, in 1784 in Bedford Co.,Virginia. There was no record of where they were married or where they came from. For the past six months, I've requested copies of deeds on all Franklin Co., Teel ancestors that I didn't already have (as grantor and as grantee). Now I feel I must pass on, without knowing all the answers, just what came to light. Franklin Co., Virginia was chartered in dec 1785, and on the first personal property tax list in 1786, the names of Adam Teal, and Nicholas Teel were listed. With this date, I estimated that Nicholas was born before 1765 and that Adam and Mary Teal were married before 1765, I now know that Nicholas Teal was born 16 June 1761, and that Adam and Mary were married on 17 June 1760. These events occurred in York Co., PA., and these are the trails that lead me to find them. Earlier this year I received copies of two deeds dated 28 Sept 1802 and 29 Sept 1802, in which Adam Teal was the grantor. He sold off 334 acres for 300 pounds Virginia money, to John Brower on onne (DB 4, P. 383, Franklin Co.,Va.), and the sale of 100 acres for 100 pound s to Hugh French (DB 4, P. 384). Adam Teal signed his name to both , but Mary signed with her mark. The Co., Clerk who recorded each deed, wrote in over her mark the name "Modeleney" . Sixteen years earlier, neither could write their names when they sold off 150 acres to Thomas Watts (DB 1, pp. 109-111, Franklin Co., Va.) The Co., Clerk wrote over their marks "Adam Teal and Mary Teal". When these Deeds came in, I also ordered those in Samuel Teal's name. Samuel Teal bought 300 acres for 400 pounds on 10 June 1793, from George and Elizabeth Spangler (DB 3, pp 190-191, Franklin Co.,Va.). Samuel Teal later sold off 260 Acres to Skelton Taylor for 520 pounds, on 1 Sept 1806. Samuel Teal and Caty Teal, his wife, Signed their names to this Deed as "Samuel Diel and Caty Diel". (DB 7, pp 417-418, Franklin Co., Va.). There is no proof that Samuel Teal is related to Adam Teal, but his land was located in the Maggotty Creek and Elliots Creek area where Adam Teal and Nicholas Teel owned their land. The next logical step was to look for records of Adam and Mary Modelany Diel in Pennsylvania before 1784. I found the marriage of John Adam Diehl to Mary Magdalena Burkhardt on the 17 June 1760 , in York twp., York Co., PA., on an L.D.S Library printout ordered by Mrs. Muriel Teel Cooter in May 1988. ..... I Wrote to the Pennsylvania German Society and since they only publish and do no research, they suggested that I contact the York co. Historical Society.... They sent me copies of data on Adam and Maria Magdalena Diel and their parents. About this same time, Robert W . Teel, (Muriel's Brother), sent me a copy of pages 88-89 of Eighteen Century Emigrants By Annette Kunselman Burgert. (note: full citation and information is found under sources). (7 ) Peter Diel is my ancestor. Adam, Caty (Maria Catherina), and Peter Teal married their spouses in Franklin Co., Virginia. Nicholas , Anna Maria, And Christina may have married before the family moved to Bedford/Franklin Co.,Va. These three marriage records have not been found in York co.,Pa., or in the Bedford/Franklin co. courthouses. Harry A. Diehl published a book in dec 1989, "Diehl Families of York and Adam Counties , Pennsylvania." and has no records of Adam and Mary after the birth of their sixth child, Maria Catherina in 1774...... The head of the family that came to America and settled in York Co., Pa., was Johanns Adam Diehl (Diel)(Thiel) and his wife Maria Catharina Kreischer and seven children, landin in Philadelphia, Pa., on 27 Aug 1739, carried on the (ship) SAMUEL from Rotterdam. He was 52 years old and his youngest son, Adam who married Mary, was only 5 years old. Johanns Adam Diehl paid his families passage and in 1740 paid for 300 acres of land in York twp. and built a grist mill and a home. His will was probated in April 1755 and his industry provided well for each member of his family. The Diehl's in York Co. continued acquiring land and building mills. The Teels in Franklin Co., Virginia , did the same thing, carrying on the skills and lessons learned form their ancestor. Harry A. Diehl knows about this family line now, as I wrote, sending copies of all the Deeds of Adam and Mary Teal in Franklin Co., and a copy of my family unit charts from the present to the past.
