Notes
a. Note:   N6 APR 2017 WAGON TRAIN TIMELINES: 1868-1869: 1) Peters daughter Orpha & husband Ben Rogers show up in CA by Oct 1868 when daughter is born. Ben registers to vote in CA in 1869. And on the 1870 Julian, San Diego Co., CA census. 2) Peters son Adam Brooks Teel registers to vote in CA in 1869 and is on the 1870 Los Angeles Census 1870: Ex dau-in-law Melvina Crane Bates & 2nd husband, John Farris Morrell are reported in Arizona in Oct 1870. 1871: Peter & sons Elijah & George Milton all register to vote in CA on 22 Aug 1871, living in Anaheim. Both Elijah & George had children born in 1870 in TX. Looks like they could have travelled with John Farris Morrell or came later than them. In fact after looking at more of Peters children & associated family Morrell there just arent any 1870 censuses for them. A lot of the Morrells show up with children born shortly after 1870 in AZ, which suggests that they were traveling when the 1870 censuses were taken. From: "Biographical Souvenir of the State of TX" pg.172- about Joel S. John didnt come to IL until 1850]. Peter Teel was the adventurous trail blazer. He arrived in Southern Illinois sometime in the mid 1830's andstarted buying land from private owners as well as the state. He amassed a total of 390 acres before moving on to Texas. I thought he may have been buying up land with his brother John and Rylie's money for them. This was not the case. In 1850, Peter and Sarah returned to Southern Illinois and sold all 390 acres to [his brother,] Rylie for the sum of $8,000+ dollars (I left my copies of the deed at work). He must have been lying to the 1850 recorder since he had received all the land in one transaction. Over the next couple of years, he sold off some 40 acre parcels. One of the grantees was his [Rylies] future son-in-law Isaac Young. An interesting correlation with another story: "In 1850, Peter and Sarah Teel, and sons-in-law, Matthew Jones and John House, were making a return trip to IL, when Matthew Jones died and was buried somewhere in Arkansas. (The Friends of the Courthouse pg.30) -Sherri "A History of Collin Co. TX" by J.L.Stamburg pg.96: The Bethel Methodist church was organized Jul 1848 by Rev Joab Biggs in the home of Wm. Rogers, 2 1/2 mi. no. of present day Frisco, TX. Charter members were Wm. & Francis Rogers, Eliz. Rogers (mother of Dr. I.S. Rogers), Joe B. Rogers, and Peter and Sarah Teel. Wm. Rogers later gave 2 acres to the organization and a log church was erected in 1852. A second bldg. was begun in 1859, but was blown down the next year by a storm. The bldg. was finally finished after the close of the Civil War. In 1874 Joe B. Rogers and others gave 10 acres of land near the church to be used as a site for camp meetings. A large shed was built for that purpose in 1888 and used until 1901. A parsonage was built in 1873 on 3 acres of land also donated by Joe B. Rogers. [note: Eliz. Rogers (mother of Dr. I.S. Rogers) is Elizabeth Brooks who m. Clayton Rogers. She is Sarah Brooks Teel's sister]. "Methodism move across North Texas" pg.74: Dirt Floor Churches - In 1848 Bethel Church was organized near Frisco (TX) by the Rev. Joab H. Biggs, the Dallas Circuit preacher, with seven members: Wm. Rogers and wife*, Peter Teel and wife, Jonathan Clarke and wife, and Elizabeth (Mrs. Beverly L.) Rogers. The first building was erected in 1852." notes: *possibly Wm Rogers who married Fannie Brooks (Sarah's Sister), Peter Teel and Sarah Brooks Teel Jonathan Clarke - don't know who this is. Elizabeth (Mrs. Beverly L.) Rogers (Elizabeth Ware). Beverly L. is the son of Joseph B. Rogers and Nancy Brooks (Sarah's sister). I (Sherri) have wondered why we've never heard anything about Peter and Sarah during the wagon train trip to California and asked the Teel Cousins about this. I received the following: 28 Sep 2000, from Meri Morgan Brennan: " Both Vera and Goldie (daughters of Susan California Teel Morgan, who is grdau of Peter and Sarah) have heard the story about how their [great] grandfather Peter Teel on the caravan from Texas would say the nightly prayer as the travelers [readied] for bed. Some nights he would get so blessed that he began to pray in Dutch (though he wasn't the immigrant, he apparently learned the Dutch language from his father)." 15 Nov 2006, email from Bill White on his research in Los Angeles Co. The had emigrated from VA to TN before 1830 He married Sarah "Sallie" Brooks about 1822, probably in Jackson Co., TN. They had 12 children. From TN a large number of his siblings and families moved to Perry Co., IL around 1840. Some of the family stayed there, but around 1848 Peter, his wife and children struck out for Denton Co. TX where the Peters Colony development was underway. They all obtained large pieces of land between Little Elm in Denton Co. over across the county line into Collin Co. That area has now changed from farmland to a thriving suburban community with Teel Road being upgraded to Teel Parkway. In 1870, Peter and a good number of his children & their families struck out for California by covered wagon. Other associated families and friends joined them and it is said the wagon train numbered 100 wagons and 1000 head of cattle. The wagon master was W.T.C. Potter. They suffered many travails on the way but finally reached Los Angeles County in CA and set about making a home for themselves. Peter died on 13 Jan 1875, but his burial place has not been discovered. His wife, Sarah, died in 1891. Family links: Parents: Adam Teele Spouse: Sarah Brooks Teel (1804 - 1891) Children: Emily Jane Teel Clark (1824 - 1910)* Elijah Alexander Teel (1829 - 1905)* George Milton Teel (1833 - 1903)* Eliza Adeline Teel Morrell (1837 - 1901)* Melvina E.
