William Ira WOTEN, tenth child of John and Mary WOTEN, was born Dec. 5, 1857. Of a family of eleven children, Mr. WOTEN was the last survivor. He was born about 8 miles southeast of Portland, IND., Jay Co. His father died when he was quite young and from early childhood he has been a tiller of the soil, a calling to which he applied himself vigorously until death. In the year 1878, on Dec. 12th, he was united in marriage to Miss Susan SWARNER, near Portland, IND. To this union nine children were born. The two oldest, an infant daughter buried in Indiana, and a son who was killed by lightning at the age of 15, and another son and daughter, together with his wife, preceded him in death, Mrs. WOTEN passing away on Jan. 17, 1917. The 5 remaining children are Claude S. of Newman, California, Frank A. of Petaluma, California, Goldie F. at home, Mrs. H.H. Strufing of Martel, NB, and Mrs. H.H. Hall of Roca, NB. Besides the five children, there are nine grandchildren, several nieces and nephews to mourn his going besides many neighbors and friends. The family moved from Indiana in the spring of 1882 to the home where he passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, Dec. 24, at the age of 76 years and 19 days. The family knew many of the trials of pioneer days and save for two years in Bartley, NB., and two years at Arapahoe, NB, he has resided continuously here, rearing the five children now living, to manhood and womanhood. Mr. WOTEN united with the Church of Christ at the Hooker school house many years ago and has been loyal and faithful to it ever since. Many are the ministers who will ever remember the WOTEN home. Mr. WOTEN was always a keen observer of all things about him, always progressive in spirit, never forcing his ideas on others but always striving by deed and word to live the Christ life before his fellow man. The songs sung at his funeral are favorites of his because of their message to us. Funeral services were conducted by Bro. J. W. Hilton of Lincoln, assisted by the Rev. Dixon, on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 27th, at the Methodist church in Adams. The following relatives and friends from a distance were present at the funeral of Mr. W. I. WOTEN: Mrs. and Mrs. Ray HUNT, Mr. and Mrs. Royal BACON, Mrs. S. H. HURST and daughter, Mrs. and Mrs. Ben DAVIS, Mr. and Mrs. Frank MCILRAVEY and daughter, Mildred of Tecumseh; Mrs. Elnora BACON of Crab Orchard; Mr. and Mrs. George MOREN and granddaughter of Lincoln; Mr. and Mrs. Elbert E. A. FREYE, Mr. and Mrs. H. D. STRUFING of Martel: Mr. and Mrs. Geo. STRUFING of Crete; Mr. and Mrs. George SPELLMAN of Roca; Rev. and Mrs. Otto FALVE of Sprague. Words fail to express to all those who so kindly, so generously and thoughtfully assisted us in our every need during our great sorrow. May God Bless each and every one.
Note: Ira was about 12 years old when his father died. OBITUARY
