a. Note:   From The Lebo Enterprise May 21, 1908 Dorcas Higgins Dorcas Higgins, departed this life May 19th 1908 at the home of her son, James, in Lebo Kansas, aged 88 years, 1 month, 12 days. Born, Dorcas Lafferty in Orange county, N.C. The family imigrated to orange county, Ind. when she was 10 years of age. She united with the M.E. Church when 17 years old and through her long life was a faithful Christian. He was married to James W. Higgens in 1843. To them were born eight children, five of whom survive, three together with her husband have preceded her to the better land. Mr. Higgins went to the Civil War as Captain of Co. K. 49 Ind Vols. he was severely wounded at Cumberland Gap and died of his injuries in 1866. In 1879, she moved with her children to the old Olivet neighborhood in Osage Co., Kans. The services were held at her late home conducted by Rev. J.C. Miller, and the interment in Lincoln Cemeter on the 20th. Thus we relate the years and honors of a patriot in the nation and a mother in Israel, in that she a pioneer of Indiana and Kansas, sacrificed her beloved husband on the Alter of Freedom in the hour of her country's need and devoted 42 years of her widowhood to her chldren's comfort and welfare.
