JOHN WESLEY RANDALL and 29. MARY ELIZABETH HAYES. He married 15. ALLIE LORRAINE MATILDA ROBERTS September 03, 1885. 15. ALLIE LORRAINE MATILDA ROBERTS, born September 23, 1864 in LEICESTER, NC; died July 27, 1949 in WENATCHEE, WA. She was the daughter of 30. MARCUS QUINTILLIAN ROBERTS and 31. MARTHA L ROBERSON. Notes for JOHN MADISON RANDALL: BOTH JOHN AND ALLIE WERE BORN ON SOUTH TURKEY CREEK. JOHN IS BURIED IN THE BELL CHURCH CEMETERY, LEICESTER, NC AND ALLIE IS BURIED IN WENATCHEE, WA. IN THE EARLY 1900'S, THEY MOVED TO ALBERTA, CANADA WHERE THEY HOMESTEADED A LARGE FARM. IT IS TOLD THAT, SINCE IT WAS JOHN'S WORK ETHICS TO WORK FROM DAYLIGHT TILL DARK, THE LONG CANADIAN SUMMER DAYS NEARLY KILLED BOTH JOHN AND HIS PLOW-HORSES. AFTER ABOUT TWO YEARS, JOHN RETURNED TO HIS FARM IN NC AND ALLIE CHOSE TO REMAIN IN CANADA. FROM: ANCESTORS OF FRANCES ALEXANDER MILLER JOHN WAS A MEMBER OF BELL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH AND CALLED HIMSELF A "NORTHERN METHODIST." HE WAS ALSO A STRONG REPUBLICAN. HE FARMED AND WAS INTO THE LUMBER BUSINESS IN HIS EARLY YEARS. LAND SPECULATION AND REAL ESTATE BECAME HIS PRIMARY PURSUIT. HE WAS CONSIDERED A FINE PROVIDER FOR HIS FAMILY. I REMEMBER HEARING THE "OLD FOLKS" SAYING THAT "JOHN REALLY DRESSED HIS GIRLS IN STYLE". HE HAD A LOT OF "STYLE" HIMSELF AND ALSO HAD AN EXPLOSIVE VOCABULARY. FOR A FEW YEARS JOHN AND ALLIE LIVED IN DEL RIO, TN. WHEN THEY CAME BACK TO LEICESTER, THEY BUILT A LOVELY TWO-STORY HOME ON THE PROPERTY ADJOINING BRICK METHODIST CHURCH, HWY #63. JOHN AND ALLIE'S CHILDREN WERE ALL BORN IN THIS HOUSE. WHEN THEIR CHILDREN REACHED ADULTHOOD, THEY QUCKLY SCATTERED TO VARIOUS STATES AND TO ALBERTA, CANADA. AFTER THE TWO OLDEST SONS WENT WEST, ALLIE TOOK THE BABY, MILDRED, TO VISIT "HER BOYS". BY THAT TIME, FOUR OF THE GIRLS HAD MARRIED AND MOVED AWAY. THIS LEFT PAULINE, FLORENCE AND WAYNE AT HOME WITH THEIR FATHER. IN TIME, JOHN TOOK THESE CHILDREN WEST, TOO. HE BOUGHT LAND THERE BUT HE WAS DISSATISFIED AND CAME BACK TO BUNCOMBE COUNTY FOR A FEW YEARS. ALLIE NEVER CAME BACK TO LIVE, BUT SHE VISITED EVERY FEW YEARS, AND JOHN VISITED HER AND ALL THE CHILDREN WHEREVER THEY LIVED. HE FINALLY SETTLED IN GREENSBORO, NC, WHERE HE BOUGHT LAND AND "SPECULATED" TO HIS HEARTS CONTENT! FROM: THE RANDALL ROUND-UP Notes for ALLIE LORRAINE MATILDA ROBERTS: ALLIE MOVED FROM ALBERTA, CANADA TO THE STATE OF WASHINGTON IN THE EARLY 1940'S. SHE LIVED WITH HER DAUGHTER, ALICE, ON VASHON ISLE IN THE PUGET SOUND FOR SEVERAL YEARS. FINALLY, SHE MOVED INTO A RETIREMENT COMPLEX IN WENATCHEE, WA. SHE CHOSE IT BECAUSE IT HAD A BRIDGE CLUB AND SHE COULD GARDEN, QUILT, AND VISIT HER SON, BEN AND HIS WIFE, MILLIE, WHO LIVED NEARBY. IN 1949, ALLIE DIED AND WAS BURIED IN WENATCHEE. Notes for WAYNE MARCUS RANDALL: WAYNE WENT TO KITSCOTY, ALBERTA IN 1916. HE WAS A GREAT FARMER AND RANCHER, BUT PRIMARILY WORKED IN HEAVY CONSTRUCTION AS A CATERPILLAR OPERATOR. HE WORKED ON THE AL-CAN HIGHWAY. HE LOVED ALASKA AND THE NORTH WEST TERRITORIES. IN 1963, HE TOLD ME A STORY WHICH HE SAID HE HAD NEVER TOLD HIS FAMILY AND PROBABLY NEVER WOULD: HE MET AND LOVED A GIRL IN A LARGE CITY [I BELIEVE IT WAS EDMONTON]. THEY WERE SECRETLY MARRIED BECAUSE HER PEOPLE WERE SOCIALLY PROMINENT AND DISLIKED WAYNE. WITHIN A FEW DAYS, HOWEVER, THEY FOUND OUT ABOUT THE MARRIAGE, AND HER FATHER HAD THE MARRIAGE ANNULLED. WAYNE DIDN'T WANT TO CAUSE HER MORE TROUBLE, SO HE FADED OUT OF THE PICTURE. THAT SAME YEAR, 1927 ALICE McCLOUD WAS BORN. SHE WAS WAYNE'S DAUGHTER. HE SAW HER OFTEN THROUGH HER CHILDHOOD AND HELPED SEND HER TO LAW SCHOOL. SHE KNEW WHO HE WAS AND THEY STAYED IN TOUCH, WITH NO MORE TROUBLE OR HEADACHE FOR ANYONE. IN 1963, SHE WAS AN ATTORNEY IN TACOMA, WA., AND , AS UNCLE WAYNE SAID, "A DAMNED GOOD ONE"! HE SAID SHE TOLD HIM THAT SOMEDAY SHE MIGHT LOOK ONE OF US UP, WHEN ALL THE PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS ARE DEAD AND GONE. FROM: THE RANDALL ROUND-UP x. MILDRED RANDALL, born 1908 in LEICESTER, NC; died 1925 in KITSCOTY, CANADA; married LAWRENCE CLARK. Notes for MILDRED RANDALL: WHEN MILDRED WAS QUITE YOUNG, SHE MARRIED LAURENCE "SLIM" CLARK. HE WAS A COWBOY. HER CHILD, JAMES, WAS ONE AND A HALF YEARS OLD WHEN SHE DIED. AFTER HER DEATH, HER SISTERS, MARY AND ALICE, OFFERED TO TAKE JIMMY. "SLIM" CONSENTED BECAUSE HE HAD "NO WOMEN FOLK" TO HELP CARE FOR HIS BOY. JIMMY LIVED WITH HIS AUNT MARY AND HER HUSBAND, JACK. SLIM VISITED OFTEN AND HELPED SUPPORT HIM. THEY FINALLY AGREED IT WOULD BE BEST IF MARY AND JACK ADOPTED HIM AND SO THEY DID. SO, MILDRED'S SON BECAME JIM HERMAN. [I HAVE ONE PICTURE OF HIM, HE WAS TALL AND SLENDER.] HE MARRIED BETTY IN SEATTLE, WA. SHE HAD TWO SONS BY A PREVIOUS MARRIAGE. SHE AND JIM HAD ONE SON. I DON'T KNOW HIS NAME, BUT THE LAST I HEARD, HE WAS LIVING SOMEWHERE NORTH OF LAGUNA HILLS, CA. JIM HERMAN DIED IN 1952 IN CALIFORNIA. FROM: THE RANDALL ROUND-UP
