"Thomas Payne, the name is also shown as Pain, was born in Spotsylvania Co., VA, in 1763. When about 12 years old he moved with his parents to Orange Co., VA. While a resident of Orange Co., VA, Thomas Payne enlisted in the winter when he was approaching his seventeenth birthday, and served one month as private in Captain Graves� Virginia Company. He then enlisted and served two months as private in Captain Yancey�s Company, Colonel Dabney�s Virginia Regiment. Two weeks after this service he enlisted, served six weeks as private in Captain Harris� Company, Colonel Dabney�s Virginia Regiment and was in the battle of Jamestown. He then enlisted and served two months as private in Captain George Waugh�s Company, Colonel Dabney�s Virginia Regiment. After his service he moved to Rowan Co., NC. About twelve years later he moved to Burke Co., NC and seven years later he moved to Buncombe Co., NC. He was allowed pension on his application executed January 10, 1833, at which time he was a resident of Buncombe Co., NC. He moved to Laurel Co., KY in 1846 and to Buncombe Co., NC in 1848. In 1849, one A. L. Paine witnessed the signature of soldier, in Buncombe Co., NC, his age and relationship not stated. There are no further family data". Note: There is an Andrew L. Paine, age 27, father John and mother Mary, on the 1850 Buncombe Co., NC census record.
