Was the 4th Earl of H ertford but, like his father and uncle, was more generally known as Earl of Clare. He was pr esent at the Coronation of King Richard I at Westminister, 3 Sept. 1189, and of King John 2 7 May 1199. He sided with Barons against King John, and his Castle at Tonbridge was taken . On 9 Nov 1215 he was one of the commissioners who, on part of the BArons, was to discuss p eace with the King. On Mar 1215/6 his lands in counties Cambridge, Norfolk, Suffolk and Esse x were granted to ROBERT de BETUN. RICHARD and his son GILBERT, were among the Barons who we re excommunicated by the Pope in 1215. He died between 3 Oct and 28 Nov 1217. He married AM ICIA, Countess of Gloucester, second dau. of WILLIAM FITZROBERT, Earl of Gloucester. His sec ond wife, HAWISE, was the dau. of ROBERT de BEAUMONT, Earl of Leicester. She died 17 Jan 123 9/40.
