a. Note:   [ralphroberts.ged] [ddandrm.ged] Concise Encyclopedia Article Cid, El (1040?-1099), Spanish warrior, whom later legend made into a national hero and the embodiment of chivalry and virtue. He was originally named Rodrigo D´┐Żaz de Vivar. El Cid was born in Vivar near Burgos. He served King Sancho III of Castile and then King Alfonso VI, but in 1081 he was exiled. He subsequently served several Muslim rulers. El Cid's military career culminated in 1094 with his capture of Valencia, which he ruled until his death. El Cid's exploits are recorded in many works, including the most famous Spanish epic, The Song of the Cid. Composed about 1200, the epic describes El Cid's heroic deeds and the golden age of medieval chivalry.||| His name comes from the Arabic 'El Sayyid' which means 'the Lord'.|||
