Note: My mother was a handsome woman, the essence of a Southern Lady, who believed strongly in God, especially in her later years. She says she captured my Dad's heart by NOT chasing after him, something that most of the other girls in town were doing. He was probably attracted as well by her physical beauty and her sense of humor. She had a hearty laugh - and she and the Wells girls always had a ball when they were around each other. The Wells' girls father, John, was a rough-talking (but good hearted man) who had a printshop down near the waterfront in Elizabeth City. I believe it was at the very end of Main Street as it ended on the Pasquotank River. John told Dad he had a niece that Dad should meet. That niece was Mom. John's wife was Minnie Lou, Helen's sister and the first surviving child of my grandmother. (see the Bell family history for more on this)
