Note: Andrew McHaffie, b. PA cir. 1770s or 1780, d. 1847/1848 Knox Co., TN, will made 1847, probated Feb 1848. Much information was shared by descendants in MO and the 1880 MO census listing Andrew's descendants states that Andrew's birthplace was PA. I have found an Andrew Mahaffey, b. between 1769-1771, who lived with John Mahafey/McHaffie of Botetourt Co. VA 1787, and John was perhaps Andrew's elder brother. Andrew "Mahaffey" appears as age 16-21 years (in home of John Mahafey, taxpayer) on The 1787 Census of Virginia, Botetourt Co., by Schreiner-Yantis. Andrew McHaffie was a witness at marriage of John McHaffie and Jannet/Jenny Campbell in Oct 1789, Botetourt Co. VA, per Botetourt County Marriages 1770-1853 by Vogt and Kethley, and name appears "Andrew Haffy" with John's name shown McHaffey. An officer of the court is also listed as a witness, the third witness, and perhaps Andrew was still underage. The marriage of John McHaffey and Jenny Campbell, 27 Oct 1789, was performed by Rev. Edward Crawford (Presbyterian, educated at Princeton University, NJ). Another witness was John Brush, the bondsman was Samuel Kennerly, and the third witness was Benjamin Rowe (deputy clerk, lawyer), consent - Robert Campbell, father - 20 Oct 1789. The marriage ceremony was performed at or near Fincastle, VA, since Rev. Edward Crawford was pastor of the Sinking Spring and Spreading Spring Presbyterian Congregations there until 1792 when he and 50 families moved to the Holston River area and est. Rock Spring Presbyterian. Perhaps the fact that there was a bondsman seemingly not of this family may indicate that John and Andrew's father lived in another area, was dead, or was away. Andrew McHaffie m. Catherine Harless b. cir. 1781 VA d. cir. 1854 Knox Co. TN, dau of David Harless on 22 Jun 1803, Montgomery Co. VA, per Mary Kegley's Early Adventurers on the Western Waters, vol.II. He appears in Elizabeth Petty Bentley's book Index to the 1810 Census of Virginia as Andrew McHaffy, 628, Montgomery (a large county at that time, bounded by Ohio River on the north). Andrew and Catherine moved to Knox Co TN in cir. 1811. Andrew filed a deed on 17 Nov 1815, purchasing 139 acres in TN from Jesse Galloway. Researcher F. B. McFee, Jr., wrote, stating that he found Andrew McHaffie is the signature on deed. Andrew McHaffie purchased 25 acres at Clear Fork of Flat Creek in 1828 from Jacob Miltonbarger (date 6-7-1828; date filed 3-10-1828) -- signed Andrew McHaffie. Andrew McHaffie appears on 1830 TN Census, Knox Co 373, no twp., and Andrew McHaffer is on 1830 TN Census, Knox Co 348, no twp. listed. A True Copy will be found in Bell's Book of Wills of Knox Co., TN. Andrew's will is on microfilm 1036714, item 2, US/CAN Film Area, filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1978, (made from a typescript by Alice L. Dickey, Sun City-Youngstown, AZ, donated by Mrs. George W. Hallgren, Potomac, MD). Andrew's will was filed in Knox Co., TN, in 1848. The 1850 TN Census shows his widow, Catherine, living with the son, Calvin. Catherine's parents were David Harless and wife Catharine Elizabeth ---. David was son of Johan Philip Harless (b. Germany 1716 d. Augusta Co. VA 1772 and wife Anna Margaretha Price (Preisch). Anna Margaretha was baptized Offenbach, Germany, 21 Sep 1713, d. 1784 Christiansburg, Montgomery Co. VA). There is much available about the Harless, Price families. One source shows Andrew George McHaffie. Many of us think Andrew is the brother of Jane McHaffie who m. 1803 in Montgomery Co. VA to John Ballenger, and also of John McHaffie who by 1804 is found in Knox Co. TN on Flat Creek of Holston River. I believe they are the children of James McHaffey who was in 1774 Dunmore's War, on payroll at Romney, joined Revolution in May 1775, Lancaster Co., PA, under Capt. Ross, served to end of Revolution, in Oct 1789 in PA received his pension, and moved to Montgomery Co. (cut from Botetourt Co. VA) where he lived probably as late as 1820. Compare also John McHaffie d. 1828 Knox Co., TN, Jannet Campbell, John MacHafee, runaway 'Irish servant,' 1738, master Lancelot Martin, Bucks Co. PA, per PA Gazette. Also note Pvt. John McHaffy in 1741 in Gooch's American Regiment on HMS York in War of Jenkins' Ear, in M. J. Clark's Colonial Soldiers. Pvt. Martin McHaffy was in same source, in Maryland militia, 1730s. "J. McH." and Martin McHaffey are named in Register of Marriages and Baptisms Performed by Rev. John Cuthbertson, Covenanter Minister, 1751-1791, as living in York Co., PA, in 1753 and 1754, and were visited by the pastor. The book was recently reprinted by Genealogical Publ. Co., Baltimore, and has some Braden/Broeden families among the Covenanter Presbyterian congregation. John Machiver is in 1688 Burlington Town, NJ, court records, testifying for Joseph Knight about non-payment for "their barrels." Burlington is just across the river from Bucks Co., PA. See also John McHaffie in Gargerie, Kirkcowan parish, Wigtownshire, Scotland (Galloway district) who was banished to American plantations for life on 17 Oct 1684 at Wigtown Jail because of his refusal to acknowledge King Charles II as head of the presbyterian church. Following is true copy of document hand copied by Myron H. Thomas (whose wife Mary Virginia is of Indiana McHaffies) at Virginia State Library in Richmond, VA, from microfilm reed 39, 1796-1803 Virginia State Libraries (copies can be obtained only through Christiansburg, Montgomery Co.
