Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad Company:
American railroad built to carry coal from the anthracite fields of northeastern Pennsylvania. Originally known as Ligget's Gap Railroad, it was chartered in 1851 as the Lackawanna and Western. Eventually it ran from the Lackawanna Valley in Pennsylvania west to Buffalo, N.Y., north to Lake Ontario, and east to Hoboken, N.J. The Lackawanna prospered in the early 20th century, but with the decline of coal heating and the rise of competing modes of transportation, its revenues fell. In 1960 it merged with the Erie Railroad Company, which had many miles of parallel trackage, to become the Erie Lackawanna Railway Company. In 1972 the Erie Lackawanna became bankrupt, and in 1976 it was taken over by the Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail).

Patrick J. Norton (1856-1905) by Thomas Patrick Norton II (1920- ):
Patrick Norton may have been in Cuba during or shortly after the Spanish American War (1898). There is no documentation from this period, and the information was transmitted orally by Kate Norton. Kate thought he contracted Yellow Fever there, which led to his death in 1905. He would have worked as a farrier for the Army.
Note: This information handed down in the family oral history may be false. It appears he was working for the railroad when he died, as a day laborer or as a fireman.

Narrative of Patrick J. Norton by Richard Arthur Norton, 1998:
Patrick J. Norton was born in County Galway, Ireland in 1858. He emigrated to Boston in 1880 and was joined by his brother, John Norton, in 1882. Patrick became a US citizen in 1888 while in Boston where he was working as a laborer. Patrick and John moved to Jersey City, New Jersey sometime before 1890. He worked for the railroad in Hoboken probably as a day laborer. This may have helped his son get a job at the railroad when Patrick died. In 1890 when he was 32 years old Patrick married Sarah Jane Carr in Jersey City. Patrick may also have had a brother named Matthew, who was the witness for his marriage, and was living at the same house. He died in 1905 just four months after his brother John died. His widow received a death settlement which she used to buy two rental properties in Jersey City.

Galway is a county in western Ireland on the Atlantic coast in the historic province of Connacht. The city of Galway is its capital. The county has a population of 180,364 (1991) and covers 5,940 sq./km. (2,293 sq./mi. ). Galway is bisected from north to south by Lough Corrib. To the west the mountains of Connemara district reach 730 m (2,400 ft); silver, lead, and copper are mined there, and marble is quarried. To the east, oats, wheat, and root crops are grown, and sheep and cattle are raised. Tourism, textile manufacturing, and fishing are also important. Galway has the largest percentage of Gaelic-speakers of any county in Ireland.

Jersey City, New Jersey:
Located in northeastern New Jersey on the Hudson River opposite lower Manhattan, Jersey City is the seat of Hudson County and the state's second largest city, with a population of 228,537 (1990 census). This busy port city (part of the Port of New York) has one of the most comprehensive transportation complexes on the Atlantic seaboard, making it a leading commercial and industrial center in the state (surpassed only by Newark). Chemicals, transportation equipment, clothing manufacturing, and petroleum refining are the major products of Jersey City's diversified industries. Jersey City has several colleges and a huge medical center.
First settled in 1618 by Dutch trappers, the area was acquired by Michiel Paux about 1629. About 1660, the stockaded village of Bergen was laid out. The site came under British rule in 1664. In the American Revolution the British-held fort at Paulus Hook was attacked and captured (1779) by Light-Horse Harry Lee. Jersey City, incorporated in 1820, was later expanded to include the former communities of Hudson City, Bergen, and Greenville. In 1916 a munitions warehouse on the Black Tom docks exploded, causing extensive damage; the incident was attributed to German saboteurs. Political boss Frank Hague was mayor of the city from 1917 to 1947.

City, capital of the state of Massachusetts, and seat of Suffolk county, in the northeastern United States. It is a major seaport at the head of Massachusetts Bay, an arm of the Atlantic Ocean, and is the historical, cultural, commercial, and industrial centre of New England.

Emigration from County Galway:
The period of the Great Famine (1845 -1851) was a time of particularly high emigration from this area. The chief destinations of West Galway emigrants were the U.S. cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia. Others settled in New Brunswick, Canada and in New Zealand and Australia. There was also much seasonal migration from this area to the north of England and Scotland and many West Galway people settled there too. The Great Famine dramatically altered and accelerated the rate and pattern of Galway emigration. Many thousands perished at that time. Such comments on church records as '400 people from this parish died from Famine' bear testimony to this. Tens of thousands of people of Galway ancestry are to be found throughout the world today.
