Selma (Sally) Louise Freudenberg (1921- ) went over after shopping and knocked on the door and Thomas Patrick Norton I (1891-1968) let her in. Thomas Patrick Norton I (1891-1968) was retired at the time. Mary Margaret Burke was in terrible pain and had been that way for three days. The Norton's owned the two family house and Burnette Peter Van Deusen (1913-1993) lived next door. Sally went to the people that rented downstairs and used their phone to call the doctor. He couldn't come right away and Thomas Norton I didn't help at all. The doctor came later after Selma, Tom II, and Tom III had taken the bus home. It was a very cold day. Selma called the people downstairs from a neighbor's house, when she got back to her home and found out that Mary was in the hospital. Selma visited her in the hospital and she said "thank you, you saved my life". She died twelve days later of the peritonitis. Mary Margaret Burke was told by her priest that Thomas Patrick Norton II (1920- ) would go to hell for marrying a Protestant. Mary Margaret Burke (1890-1949) didn't attend the wedding in 1942. Source: Selma Louise Freudenberg (1921- ), Oral Testimony, 1998 Mary Margaret Burke (1890-1949) by Thomas Patrick Norton II (1920- ): Nora Finn (1874-1898), the mother of Mary Margaret Burke (1890-1949) may have died during childbirth, giving birth to another child. Mary Margaret Burke (1890-1949) was raised by Catherine (Kate) Elizabeth Finn (1873-1918), her mother's sister. Kate was unmarried and a private secretary at the American Lead Pencil Company, Hoboken, NJ. Mary Margaret Burke (1890-1949) inherited Kate's belongings, which included a piano, oil paintings, a bronze statue and sterling silver tea service. Once, in Wildwood, New Jersey in the 1930s the Norton's all stayed under the boardwalk so they could avoid the sun. Mary Margaret Burke was walking under the boardwalk and hit her head on the overhead boards. She was knocked down to the ground and was left stunned. At one time she had gallstones removed. She said the pain was worse than childbirth. She had the gallstones in a milk bottle and showed everyone. Some were bigger than marbles. She also had an operation under her left arm to have a clot or a growth removed. It left a large scar where they had removed some tissue. Mary Margaret Burke (1890-1949), my mother and Sara Jane Carr, my grandmother didn't come to my wedding because I was marrying a Protestant. My aunt, Katherine Norton attended the wedding and died a month later. Source: Thomas Patrick Norton II (1920- ), Oral Testimony, 1998 Mary Margaret Burke (1890-1949) by Thomas Patrick Norton II (1920- ): My mother's house had a piano, oil pantings, and a china set that she inherited from her Katherine Finn, the woman who raised her. Once I was playing with a ball in the house and it hit the china cabinet and broke a cup. The china was so translucent that you could see the tea being added to the cup as it was poured. We had a piano, but no one in the house knew how to play it. When Marie Freudenberg, my mother-in-law would come over, she would sit at the piano and play it. James Norton, my father's brother could also play the piano. My father won a car in a raffle in 1929. He was driving my mother in the snow to the hospital for my birth on January 15 and the car did a 360 degree spin. My mother got out of the car and took a cab to the hospital. He told my father to get rid of the car. He did, and never drove a car again for the rest of his life. In a letter from him dated October 24 he told of getting a letter from you. I thought that you had gone to the pacific, but I am glad that you will be home soon. We had Molly Kelly from Boston [over] last weekend but now I remember I wrote about her. Word came from the War Department that Vince had been returned to duty on October 21. Well here's hoping we see you real soon. This busy port city (part of the Port of New York) has one of the most comprehensive transportation complexes on the Atlantic seaboard, making it a leading commercial and industrial center in the state (surpassed only by Newark). Chemicals, transportation equipment, clothing manufacturing, and petroleum refining are the major products of Jersey City's diversified industries. Jersey City has several colleges and a huge medical center. First settled in 1618 by Dutch trappers, the area was acquired by Michiel Paux about 1629. About 1660, the stockaded village of Bergen was laid out. The site came under British rule in 1664. In the American Revolution the British-held fort at Paulus Hook was attacked and captured (1779) by Light-Horse Harry Lee. Jersey City, incorporated in 1820, was later expanded to include the former communities of Hudson City, Bergen, and Greenville. In 1916 a munitions warehouse on the Black Tom docks exploded, causing extensive damage; the incident was attributed to German saboteurs. Political boss Frank Hague was mayor of the city from 1917 to 1947.
