Josephine Burke aka May Veronica Norton (1907-1995) by Thomas Patrick Norton II, 1998
Josephine (May) Burke went in to the hospital for her gall bladder. There they noticed that she had liver lesions and after the biopsy they told her she had cancer. She was 87 years old, she just got worse and worse, and 9 months later she was dead. Vincent Girard Norton, my brother stayed with her all that time to feed and care for her. Once a month Jimmy would come down and help. Jimmy would even come when he was in Virginia. Both my brothers were there the night she died. Jimmy was rolling her over to prevent bed sores when he noticed that she was dead. Josephine (May) Burke had prearranged her own funeral. Vincent was the administrator of her estate. Four people attended the funeral: James Joseph Norton II and his wife Janet Powell with Thomas Patrick Norton and Vincent Gerard Norton. Vincent was the executor of her estate. She received a small stipend from her husband's RR retirement and from his WWI veteran's benefits. I would send her a check on holidays. Once I was looking over her accounts and noticed that she had no savings and was living month to month on her Social Security. After that I started sending her checks.

Josephine lived in Jersey City, NJ. She made desserts and made parfaits that Judy Norton loved. Thomas Patrick Norton I would say "ooh-la-la" all the time. Thomas Patrick Norton I told Thomas Patrick Norton II that being in the trenches during the war was terrible so he should join the Navy.

  Shenandoah National Park, Virginia:
Shenandoah National Park lies astride a beautiful section of the Blue Ridge, which forms the eastern rampart of the Appalachian Mountains between Pennsylvania and Georgia. In the valley to the west is the Shenandoah River, from which some feel the Park gets its name, and between the north and south forks of the river is Massanutten, a 40-mile-long mountain. To the east is the rolling Piedmont country. Providing vistas of the spectacular landscape is Skyline Drive, a winding road that runs along the crest of this portion of the Blue Ridge Mountains through the length of the Park. Authorized May 22, 1926; fully established December 26, 1935. Total acreage is 196,466.19, including 79,579 acres of the designated Wilderness area.
