a. Note:   During the Civil War, Stephen served with Company D, 4th Regiment, Rhode Island Volunteers. According to his obituary and research the compiler has done to date (Jul 2002), he enlisted on his 16th birthday and served for three years. His occupation is listed as a farmer in the 1880 U. S. Census for Windham Co., CT (Sterling, p. 19, line 33) and as working in a woolen mill in the 1900 U.S. Census for the same county (Plainfield/Moosup, e.d. 518, p. 2, line 37). His obituary states he worked in the woolen mill for approximately 18 years, up until the last 15 years of his life.
