a. Note:   Robert Ransley was a Professional Soldier for much of his life. He enlisted for the 14th Regiment of Foot at Deal in Kent on the 4th April 1914 at the age of 16.
 He was a Boy Soldier at The Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Served 2 years and 5 months in France, 9 years and 275 days in the East Indies
  His service totalled 23 years 143 days (calculated after the age of 18 years from 4-4-1816), including an adjustment of 2 years in France.
  He was discharged on 18 August 1838 due to Chronic Rheumatism having had "Fever, Liver Complaint & Dysentery repeatedly and unable to march from varicose veins and general debility."
  The Officers comprising the Board having examined the Defaulter's Book , and received parole testimony from Lieut. & Adjut. Mr Donald, are of the opinion that his conduct has been good.
  On discharge, he is described as aged 39years & 9 months, height five feet ten and half inches, light brown hair, grey eyes, fair complexion and was by trade a Butcher.
  He received an Army Pension.
  In the 1841 Census he is described as an Army Pensioner and as a Framework Knitter when he married in 1845. In the 1851 Census he is a Chelsea Pensioner.
