Note: llen is the daughter of Elizabeth Boot, Thomas' first and legal wife, or Ann Wren. It appears that the two families were concurrent and probably known to each other. As Ellen lived in Nottingham, it would normally be assumed that she was the daughter of Elizabeth, however there are two reasons to doubt this. Firstly Ellen appears to have been reasonably educated and had sufficient initiative to be a business person, whereas Elizabeth's sons Thomas and Robert, were illiterate and apparently different to their three London half-brothers, who were each litterate, skilled tradesmen and businessmen. Secondly William 'Walter' Ransley's daughter Emma Christiana Ransley, married Ellen's son William Thacker, then continued to live in Nottingham. The chances of two unrelated Ransleys from different cities meeting is virtually nil. One would assume that only a close relation, such as her father's sister, would have arranged for Emma Christiana Ransley to travel from London to Nottingham. Ellen appeared in the 1851 census as a Shopkeeper, whereas her husband was a Framework Knitter. She was a General Provisions Dealer in 1861 and a Shopkeeper (widow) in 1871. Ellen Ransley, born in London, Coventry or Sheffield, was apparently the daughter of Thomas Ransley the Hairdresser, however her mother may have been either Elizabeth Boot or Ann Wren. Ellen Ransley's death informant was Thomas Taylor a Wesleyan Missionary.
