Note: In 1850 Census for Dundee, Kane Co.l, IL, William Rankin was aMerchant from Scotland with personal assets at $1000. Obituary "Died at his residence in Frankville, on Sunday eveninglast William Rankin age 78 yrs. old 4 months and 17 days. FatherRankin was born in Airdrie, Scotland, Feb 17, 1801, and came tothis country in 1832 - 1834 accompanied by three brothers, twoof whom, we believe, are still living. He was a fine specimenof that steadfast love of principle which so often inheres tothe Scotch blood. This made him an abolitionist in the earlydays of that agitation; and a firm consistent, believer in thedoctrines of the bible as he read it. Religion, politics, andeveryday living were one with him, and these made him first astrictly honest man, an earnest man, and in his day an activeworker in each of these fields. He has gone to his rest and wedoubt not, to the reward of his christian fidelity. The funeralservices were held on Tuesday last, the Masonic fraternitydirecting. The sermon was preached by Rev. Wm. Robinson, Rev.Mr. Aldrich assisting." July 10, 1879 Decorah Republican."July 11, 1879 from The Democrat "A number of our citizensattended the funeral of the late Wm Rankin of Frankville who wasburied on Tuesday. The deceased was a brother of our townsman,John Rankin."Probably emigrated to America from Glasgow 1832. Son, James,obituary states that his father, Wm emigrated with his family tothe US in 1832, stopping a short time in New York and Detroit,Michigan. They left Detroit with Wm as a engineer on thesteamer "Michigan" to Chicago, IL. This was the first steamboatto come into Chicago.They left from Port Greenock in Scotland which is near Glasgowand their little village of Airdrie is near Glasgow too.
