Note: Their first two children were born in Scotland as per 1850Census for Dundee, Kane Co., IL, but obituary says first fourchildren.William and Mary were servants of a wealthy family in Scotlandbefore emigrating.Both of her parents were born in Scotland as per 1880 Census forFrankville, Winneshiek, Iowa.Daughter's (Janette Rankin Simmons) Pension Records show thatMary attended the birth of her grandsons, William and George. OnFeb 4, 1867 she swore before her husband, a Notary, that she waspresent at the birth of her grandson, George in Maneck,Winneshiek Co. on May 20, 1861 and William on Dec 15, 1856 inLudlum Twp.

Note: Obituary The Mirror, Tonganoxie, KS page 8 column 2 "MaryRankin, at the residence of W. L. Leidy, two miles north ofTonganoxie, on Monday morning at ten o'clock. The deceased wasborn in Glasgow, Scotland Feb. 22, 1809, which made her 84 yearsone month and five days old at the time of her death. She wasmarried in Scotland at the age of 17 to William Rankin, on May26th 1826. Her husband died in Frankville, Iowa July 6th 1878.In the year 1835 they removed to America, having at that timefour children. She was the mother of eleven children, six ofwhom are now living, three sons and three daughters. One sonresides in northern Dakota, one in northern Iowa and one inIdaho, one daughter living in Nebraska and Mrs. Parney and Mrs.Leidy in this vicinity. In Scotland she became a member of thePresbyterian church, but while living in Chicago there was adivision of the church and she joined the New SchoolPresbyterian church at Dundee, IL. Removing to Frankville, Iowain 1856 she united with the M. E. Church, as the Presbyterianchurch was not represented there. Three years ago she came toKansas to pass the remaining days of her life and united withthe Congregational church of Tonganoxie.She has been a faithful christian and a loving wife and mother,and we trust no doubt will receivethereward promised to thosewho truly live a consistent Christian life. The funteral services were preached at Mr. Leidy's by Rev.Wilson and then remains were sorrowfully escorted to their finalresting place in the Reno cemetery."
