Note: Allamakee County Biographies "James Rankin, P. O. Myron, farmer,sec. 27; owns a farm of 200 acres well improved; son of Wm andMary Rankin; was born in Scotland in 1829. His father was amachinist and engineer. He emigrated with his family to theUnited States in 1832, stopping a short time in New York andDetroit, Michigan, from which latter place he came as anengineer on the steamer Michigan to Chicago, IL, it being thefirst steamboat what came into chicago, which was then a verysmall insignificant town, situated in a quagmire. His father,being a brass founder, concluded to stop there and start a brassfoundery, which he continued about ten years, then moved to afarm five miles north of Elgin, where they remained till in1855, when they came to this township, his father locating abouttwo miles north, and he upon his present farm. His father diedin 1879. Mr. R. was married to Miss Sarah Jones in 1860. Shewas a native of Wales. Their children are Mary, Ida, Nettie,and William."Obituary "James Rankin died at his home in Postville Saturdaymorning after a long illness. Mr. Rankin used to be a residentin our neighborhood."Obituary Jan 18, 1905 "Postville--James Rankin, whose seriouscondition we mentioned lastweek, passed away Saturday morninglast at his home in this city, and was buried on Tuesday in theCarithers cemetery. He has been a resident of this section formany years and a large circle of friends will be grieved to hearof his demise."Waukon Standard January 12, 1905 "Mr. James Rankin died onsaturday last at his home in Postville, aged about seventy-fiveyears. Deceased moved from his farm in Ludlow about five yearssince, to have a respite form the strenuous life which he hadalways led."
