a. Note:   William was born on March 2, 1840 but not baptised until March 9, 1842. He and his brother George were identical twins. Apprentice agreement - On 7 May 1855 William, son of Joseph Ransted of #11 Foundry Place in the Parish of St. Leonard, Shoreditch, Middlesex; put himself apprentice for 7 years to Mr. George Carlsberg, silver surgical instrument maker of 8 Meredith St. in the Parish of St. James, Clerkenwell. He was to work during the summer months from 7am-8pm and for other months 8am-8pm. His wage for the first two years was five shillings per week, the third year six shillings, the forth seven shillings, the sixth 10 shillings & the seventh 12 shillings In 1861 William was living with his brother George.
