Erastus Clore was born Mar. 9, 1857, in Howard Township, ParkeCounty, the son of Berriman and Mary Rice Clore, and lived there all ofhis life. His father was born in Boone Co., KY, in 1817, and came to Indianain 1830. His mother was born in Henry Co., KY, and raised their fivechildren on their farm in northeastern Howard Township. Berriman Clore was the son of Isreal [sic] and Frances Deer Clore.They both were born in Virginia, then moved to Boone Co., KY, and on toParke Co., IN, where they spent the rest of their lives. [Cathi's note -Israel and Frances Deer Clore actually lived in neighboring Brown Twp.,Montgomery Co., IN.] Isreal [sic] received a Patent Deed for land in Howard Township in1831. Isreal [sic], his son, Berriman, and grandson, Erastus, were allfarmers in Howard Township. Erastus also owned a mill and a resort called 'Pleasant View', onSugar Creek, in the late 1800's and early 1900's. In 1967, his heirssold the family farm to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources andit is now a part of the Shades State Park. There is a campground forcanoeists located close to where the old resort was. In 1881, Erastus (Ras) married Armenta (Minnie) Carter. She was thedaughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Lowe Carter. Ras and Minnie were theparents of Earl and Pearl Clore and Jewell Clore Mitchell. Minnie diedin 1891. Pearl died in a hunting accident at the age of fourteen. In 1892, Erastus married Elvie Keeling, daughter of Dexter and MaryLowe Keeling. They were the parents of four children; Bernard and VernClore, Gladys Clore Leath, and Betty Clore (who died in infancy). Erastus and Elvie, along with others in the community, organized andbuilt the Byron Christian Church in 1904, and were both active in thechurch all their lives. Erastus was a deacon in the church. After his death, Elvie was adeaconess in the church. A quiet, Christian lady, she was dedicated toher family, her church, and her community. Quoting from the Waveland Independant, Apr. 12, 1935, 'ErastusClore, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of the Byroncommunity, died at his home north of Byron on Wednesday, Apr. 10, after alingering heart condidtion.' Elvie continued to live on the farm. Her brother, Owen Keelinglived with her. He raised glads and sold both the flowers and the bulbs.
