Iowa Census states that they were married in AUG 1869 apparently just before the Census was taken. Vionna Fee Shanks gave me the date of 19 AUG 1869 in Polk Co. Cromwell. Male, white, widowed. He was born 29 DEC 1844. 73 years 2 months and 16 days. Retired farmer. Born in Indiana. Name of father was Thomas Cromwell born in N.C. and mother was ? Brown born in N.C. Information was given by T. Cromwell of Boone Co. Iowa. Date of death was 15 MAR 1918. The cause of death was lobar pneumonia. He died at 7:25 A.M. He had had lobar pneumonia for 14 days. He was buried in Hull Cemetary on 17 MAR 1918 and undertaker was A.M. Sundberg of Madrid. 8-02257. !NOTE: On the 1900 census the Cromwells were stated as having 9 children and 8 alive. Also on the census it also stated that they had been married 31 years. Known as "Curg" or "Kurg." Civil War Record: Co. H 12th Iowa Infantry. CIVIL WAR VETERAN BURIED LAST SUNDAY-HAD LIVED IN COUNTY NEARLY 70 YEARS--Funeral services over the remains of Curtis Cromwell, a veteran of the Civil War and for nearly 3 score and ten year a resident of Boone Co. were held Sunday afternoon from the Meadow Grove church, West of Luther. Rev. G.H. Johnson, pastor of the Methodist church of Madrid, preached the funeral discourse, and the audience included a large number of the old friends and neighbors of the deceased. Curtis Cromwell was born in Indiana, Dec. 29, 1844, and died at his home near Luther March 15, 1918, at the age of 73 years, 2 months and 16 days. He moved to Iowa with his parents when but six years of age and resided in Boone County until he enlisted in the Was in 1865, in Co. H. 12th Iowa Infantry in which he served until the close of the war. He was united in marriage to Miss Minerva Jenkins in 1869, and to this union were born nine children, six boys and three girls. The mother, one son, Willie, and one daughter, Tina Pearl, have preceded the husband and father in death. Those surviving are Tom Cromwell, Boone; Ezekiel Cromwell, Akron, Colorado; James Cromwell Dayton, Iowa, Alfred Cromwell, Stratford; Albert Cromwell, Madera, California; Minnie Green, Luther; Eliza Stoneburner, Harcourt, Iowa; 25 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, two brothers and five sisters. Mr. Cromwell led an unusually active life and in common with the other pioneers of early Iowa faced all difficulties and disadvantages of a new and undeveloped country. He labored faithfully to fulfill every obligation resting upon him and commanded the respect of all his neighbors and acquaintances throughout his long life. Interment was made in the Hull Cem., south of the church where the funeral services were held. !PENSION: Curtis Cromwell of Luther, Iowa. #909067. Born Dec. 29, 1846 in Clay Co. Indiana. Children: Minnie Cromwell born July 5, 1875, Thos Cromwell born April 1, 1870, Ezekiel Cromwell born Dec. 30, 1871, James Cromwell born Dec. 13, 1873, Eliza Cromwell born March 20, 1880, Alfred Cromwell born Feb 27, 1884, Albert Cromwell born Feb. 27, 1884. Done on April 10, 1915. !PENSION: Declaration of Pension for Curtis Cromwell. Act of May 11, 1912. State of Iowa in the County of Boone on 24th June 1912. Curtis Cromwell of Luther, Boone Co. Iowa. He is 65 years of age. Identical to person who enrolled at Newton, Iowa on 31 JAN 8165 as a Private in the 1st Lt. David Moreland Co. H 12th Regiment Iowa Inf. Vet. in the Civil War and discharged at Memphis Tenn. 20 JAN 1867. 5 feet 7 1/2 inches, fair complexion, gray eyes, brown hair and occupation farmer, was born Dec. 29, 1846 at Clay Co. Indiana.
